Hey all first post here, so not sure whether its in the right spot or not but basically i just acquired an xr250 L '03 model that i will mainly be using for hunting and the odd day out.

few questions as the bike needs a couple things.

1) How do i tell if the rear suspension is rooted? i know the front forks need new seals but the rear seems very soft. Mind you this is my first bike so thats the way they might be. I am 100kg (220pounds?) and when i sit on the bike i rekon it moves down about 20cm (8inches?)

2) can i change or add a kick starter on the bike as i dont like the thought of being stuck out bush with no one around and a flat battery

3) If it chews oil and there is no leaks, is it fair to say the piston rings are gone?

thanks in advance

the xr 250 has really soft suspension, its a dirt bike after all,
press down on the back and then release it, it it bounces back with no hesitation then its buggered, it should come up slower than just the spring, as for burning oil, have you got blue smoke from the back??
if so the rings are probably gone, but most singles use a bit of oil,
ive had xr250's that have done well over 50000 miles on them before the rings went,
i cant say ive ever owned a xr that didnt have a kick start,
but if all else fails they are easy enough to bump start

well my brother said he he has to fill it up every 3rd trip(each trip being about 3 hours worth of riding)
so im assuming he measured it and there was none on the dipstick, but it could just be low on the dispstick which is still fine correct? as long as it is in between the top and bottom mark of the disptick?

Im not taking his word for it tho as he is not very mechanically minded
but if that was the case, thats real bad isnt it???

it depends on how he rides it, the oil capacity in the engine is only 1.4litres and between low and high on the dip stick is only 300 or 400mls so to be using 100mls on a good hard ride is more than acceptable, unless you have a load of blue smoke coming out the back, i would worry too much about it,
carry a wee bit of oil on the bike, and always check it before a ride, and the mighty xr will never let you down Very Happy
