Well i was just trying a website on insurance and checked the modifications, and was just wonderering are all these valid, as im sure just about everyone whos ever crashed a bike has changed indi's and not declared it?! and some of them just seem silly, whos going to declare there running off road use only nitrous oxide??!

look at the barmy list

Are we all technically running on void policys Laughing Laughing

I declare everything, if the bike or something off the bike gets nicked then I can claim without worrying. Also if I hit someone(my fault) and the bike is taken away and the modifications are seen by an assessor then they may refuse to pay out for the damage to my bike.

Anyone willing to take the chance can't grumble if everything goes tits up.

But i mean small things like having custom arrow indicators,
surely i need not have to declare this, its just something i did so i had some indi's as pug ones are tad expensive.

most of the time they just wont replace them

So if you fall off and break your indicators, the insurance will only replace them with standard ones unless you have told them about the modification

The only ones that tend to void policies are the performance enhancing ones. If you have a 50cc ped and you have shoe horned an R1 engine into it you may need to declare that. Smile

Of course if they are picky they can refuse to payout with any modification. Unlikely though

That isn't a good thing.

My bike wasn't production line cond' when I insured it, just declared it as: "any mod's?"

me: not that I know of. - Where would you stand with this?

I declare anything right down to my mini indicators and even my tank pad. If anyone were to have a claim of thousands of pounds against them (and told the insurance company they had no modifications), yet when the assessor saw the bike and even if they were only cosmetic modifications, the policy is void as you have not told them exactly what they are insuring. Wow, that was a long sentence! Anyway, they'd pay the claim, then come and sue you for the cost of the claim.

That's how I believe it works, anyway. But, I tell them everything, no matter how insignificant. It's not worth not doing it, really.

Something for people on 33bhp licenses and no restrictors to consider. I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, but be aware of the consequences.

Most assessors either don't have a clue or just aren't arsed or so I've found anyway. (perhaps my opinions biased as they were viewing me as the innocent party)

I don't see the point in declaring 'mods' down to the tiny little things. At the end of the day mini indicators and a tank pad etc don't effect a bikes handling or visibility in a way to create or cause an accident. Plus modifying a bike (in the mini indicator etc sense) generally lowers the value of a bike, so by declaring you are more than likely to pay more for your insurance to get less payed back should the 'nasty occasion' happen.

So many people get away with playing ignorance, that it just makes me think why shouldn't we all use the excuse 'was like that when I got it'

Ignorance is no defence, its up to you to be aware of any modifications. IF they find any when you need to claim they will use them against you and not pay out. Crying or Very sad

I love the way nitrous is next to changing your indicators.

I rarely declare stuff, not even race cans. It's just an opportunity for them to rape more money out of you.

Most of the time I have the original to put back on should I need to. And if the bike gets stolen then it doesn't matter anyway cuz they won't see it!

When I smashed my bandit big time they never even viewed the bike. Just paid the man.

So what would you do if you had a crash big enough to make you immobile, and they looked at your bike and it had a micron, are they leaniant on that kind of modification or is that a possible total loss?

I really think i should declare some things soon hah

When I was insuring the bike, the only thing I could think of was a hugger.

I asked them if I needed to declare it and they said no.

Potentially it could alter visability though? If your Mini indicators were smaller than the standards, possibly less light is being emmitted, and so you are less visable?

I`m not being a prick, but just understanding theyre arguments.

All the best

I was recently thinking the same thing about my insurance. I havent declared the Akrapovic exhausts. However, as Yamaha and Akrapovic state no performance gain I dont see it as a performance part, just an accessory. I dont see why it makes a difference if I claim as the value of the bike when insured doesnt take into account the cost of the cans because they were put on after.

When I claimed after my ZXR400 was reversed into and written off, the insurance assessor didnt even inspect the bike let alone care about mods. I got a cheque for £1700 within a few weeks no questions asked. The bike had a custom paint job, MTC exhaust and wasnt restricted and nothing was declared.

EDIT: What about when the policy terms and conditions say the bike cannot be modified? Does a can count as a modification?
