if the front disk was slightly warped?

It's my mate's bike and to begin with the disk was rather warped and he's managed to straighten it by hitting it with a mallet. Do they think it could return to it's previous warpedness when he starts to use the bike and heat is generated?

Any other ways to straighten a disk?

Yes. Depends how bad, but they can fail on warped disks.

Thanks for your reply, any idea if the straightening technique my mate used is likely to reversed when heat is applied to the disk during braking? Cheers

I'm not sure I'm afraid, but regarding the braking system as a whole and what it does I would rather just buy new disks for piece of mind, but that's just me.

Don't be surprised if it goes back as it heats up.

I also suppose you could in theory have weakened the disk by hammering it straight?

Mine were very slightly warped on ZX7R, the effect was only really noticed at low speed.
The garage i took it to know me quite well, not sure if that makes a difference but it was called up as an advisory to be fixed.

You will not straighten a warped disk by hitting it with a mallet! That's ridiculous.

My dad tried to sort a warped disk on my bandit by filing off the worst bit.

It depends on the testing centre too, my mate bought a mille that had just failed its MOT on warped disks. He took it straight to his local centre on the off chance it passed, and they didn't notice anything.

Not sure if it was just the tester wasn't quite as 'on it' or if they had different testing equipment. Because the brake testing machine should show it up. The needle would wobble if a disk is warped and they would feel pulsing.

You could sort a slightly warped disk with a lathe, but it's worth buying a new one. (Or second hand).

Ebay isn't the only source for second hand parts. Ring round the breakers!!!

Also the disc on the bike may be the same disc as on another model, you may want to check this out.

Bodging or skimping paying out for anything brake related is a silly game to be playing.

I supose if you knew what you were doing you could heat it up and the quench it with a soaking wet rag, the heat and sudden cooling would also keep it hard nd not soften it, as hiiting it with a mallet could, also if it is dne to many times the disc, would be come over work hardend and work shatter on a hard breaking.

I think the best option is to buy a new one, as can you put a price on you safty and getting home safe.
