zx6 j1 reving problem

My bike won't freely rev over 5k when driving. However in neutral it will rev all the way to the red line. It feels like its not getting fuel and becomes jerky. I just put new plugs and oil and filters. I have striped down the carbs and cleaned them. I have looked thought my haynes manual and I think it could be the throttle sensor, fuel cut off valves for the cat. My brother thinks it could be a clutch problem? Its going in for its valve clearances on Tuesday so if I can't fix myself will ask the mechanic to have a bash.

Sounds like you may be getting fuel starvation under load, couple of quick checks you could do is ensure the fuel pump is operating correctly, i.e can you hear the pump relay clicking, and check your fuel lines from the tank to the carbs, its possible you may have a blocked fuel filter or a restriction in the tap or lines somewhere.
However if you've cleaned the carbs and replaced both fuel and air filters this is unlikely but y'never know.

Without meaning to sound patronizing, are they definitely the correct plugs and are they gapped properly?

I have checked the pump which is working. Will give the lot another check haven't checked all lines so will take a look at that.

fuel pump notoriously crap on j1 models changed on the j2 although look the same. if you do need to change it opt fot the j2 model.

sounds like blocked main jet in the carbs mate, undo the drain plugs on the carbs, drain the dry and then try again

zx6r f3 i had did the same thing, sounds sweet as a nut on the drive but was kicking and farting through the gears.

2 things i checked and it stopped doing it was.

1- took fuel pump off and checked flow etc.
2- noticed a big chucky pipe off that runs along the top of the air box.

i think the 2nd had something to do with the air getting the the carbs, i cant remember exactly but i got some help here regarding it.
after doing both these things it stopped and was fine again.
