Key Snapped In Disc Lock!! Help!!

Can you believe it! Nice sunny morning and i snapped the key in my Oxford Disc Lock!! Gutted couldn't get out for a ride but now left wondering how the hell I get the lock off?

If any one has any ideas I'm all ears. was gonna take the wheel off and just try and drill the cylinder out!?!?

No way you can tease the bit stuck in out, or maybe very carefully try with a bit of superglue on the bit you got in your hand.

I know the lock - they have quite chunky keys, don't they? Try an easy out, or screw/stud extractor set as some places call them. They are like a big self tapping screw with a left handed thread to remove snapped bolts etc. Use the smallest possible one in the set and drill a tiny pilot hole in the key. Stick they easy out in (a few turns ought to to it) and pull out what's left of your key!

Do you still have a spare key?

If you don't then just use a jigsaw or hacksaw to take it off. Just put some cloth or cardboard between the lock and the disc to stop it banging about.

Just cut it off, shouldnt take much really. If you do have to cut it off, a video would be insightful if you can.

Just whack a grinder through it, should take all of 5mins (as long as you use a cutting disc)

Tomorrow should be a fun day then!!

Hacksaw it is, may take a while but have nothing better to do. I would use the super glue trick but the key is seized sideways in the lock (hence how it snapped). If I can get my hands on a grinder then all the better.

Remove the disc and clamp the lock in a vice if you're going to use a hacksaw or you'll be there all day. If it's in a vice, it wont move about and you can use both hands on the hacksaw. Make sure you have plenty blades to hand, it's hardened steel.

It might be easier to attack the side of the actual lock rather than the pin (may not actually be hardened). You'll just need to try it and see.

a strong magnet and some tweezers should help you get the bit of key out

Im assuming that u have a spare key

if you dont, you could propably get a key cutting place to make a new one from the 2 bits of key that you have

I have managed to get the old key out (using a modified pair of tweezers and a small screwdriver)

Unfortunately the spare key won't open the lock, it turns about 2/3s the way round then ceases up... don't want to try forcing it again otherwise it's game over.

So I may still have to resort to cutting the damn thing off!

can you not just drill through the column? Then when all the pins have fallen out just twist with a screw driver. But first, try putting your spare key in it and really "jump" it around in the lock. Add a bit of WD40. One of the pins may be stuck and you might be able to knock it free.

Definitely check the key goes all the way in. I have one of these and occasionally, I have to wiggle the key a little to get it all the way in, otherwise it won't lock/unlock properly.

Hi,

Assuming the key is all the way in, give is a couple of squirts of wd40 and leave it work for a bit. Give the body a few taps with the hammer and try again. May help free a pin thats struck.
