The instructor will ask you to read a number plate from 20 metres away (or close enough to it) you can use your glasses if required and if you fail I very much doubt they'll allow you to continue the session, certainly won't let you out on the road!

Hope that helps Smile

CBT is not really a test - you just keep going until the instructor is happy you meet the standard.

Regarding the eye test - guess it is reading a car plate from roughly 20m

If you fail it then you WONT be allowed to continue as it is illegal to be in control of a vehicle if you dont meet eye sight requirements.

If you need glasses to pass the eye sight test you will need to wear the glasses for the duration of the day when you are operating or sat on the bike

if you arent sure go to an opticians and get tested, or pace out 20 steps from the front of a car, turn round and see if you can read the plate
Pref on a car that isnt yours so you dont know the reg Smile

Eyesight reqs

Same here Moonie. Had mines yesterday (Thursday) and passed. Instructor asked me and the other chap if we needed glasses, I said yes I do and put them on. Other chap didn't need them. That was it. No eye test involved! LOL.

Yes - I am actually registered blind don't you know?! What a rubbish school I must have chosen for them to let that slip eh. LOL.

No school is going to be absolutely meticulous with each and every detail of the CBT or anything else for that matter! It's just not practical. If I was squinting my eyes and all sorts, then that'd be a different story... Thumbs Up

I've done two CBT's now, one in Sussex and one in Norfolk. The guys in Sussex asked me to read a numberplate that was about 4 miles away, I got one "character" wrong, so they asked me to read another one and then allowed me to carry on with the CBT.

The guys in Norfolk asked me to read a numberplate that was about 10 feet away and let me carry on. Strangely enough, the examiner on my test took me to do the eyesight test bit and the car was about 10-15ft away! Maybe that explains the lack of driving skills up here! Laughing

I don't know why you're jumping down Tutton's throat. Fact remains it is a legal requirement for the CBT to contain an eye test. If the schools didn't do it, they ARE shit schools.

Legal requirement for the CBT to contain an eye test yes, but nobody ever gets out and measures 20.5m do they. It could be 15m or 25m... its just guidelines at the end of the day.

So if a school gave pupils 1hr 50mins of on the road riding instead of 2hrs they are not as good as a school who'd give you 2hrs?? NO! It doesn't work like that. It's never as clear cut... you simply can't assume things like that.

And yes, ofcourse i'm safe on the roads. I can see! That's my obligation. And if I couldn't then i'm sure reading a number plate wouldnt pick that out. I guess my instructor was satisfied that I could see clearly (which i can) and left it at that. Besides, the actual DSA bike test WILL check my eye sight thats for sure.

I aint jumping down noones throat, all i'm saying is that you can't assume a school is rubbish cos they don't do something pretty basic... At the end of the day it's the instructors judgement that will give you a pass or fail on you CBT.

It's all swings n roundabouts! I'm just fighting my corner ere. Cool

Paaaaah... Rant over! Neutral

They (edit) should not have the authority to deem you safe on the roads if they are not carrying out procedures properly. End of.

It is also the examiners decision whether you pass or fail

Doesnt make it right when you crash cos u didnt see a car early enough as your eyes werent at minimum standards and werent checked

I was more touchy about whether I know if I'm safe to ride on the roads.

I have been riding bikes for a long time for my age, and not only did I do my CBT, I went out with my dad on my first couple of rides to work on my road awareness and still do every week. Just because my instructors missed out a small and fairly redundant piece of my CBT does not mean I am not safe.

Not jumping down throats or having a dig, just pointing out that you cant draw those sorts of conclusions. Thumbs Up

Was fine on the bike test, but nearly tripped up when I did my car:
"Can you please read the registration of the mauve car?"
..."What colour's mauve? Do you mean the corsa, the 106, or the Renault 5?"

I only understand Man Colours, like blue, black, red, etc... Razz

When I did my test as we came out of the test centre the instructor pointed towards the back of the car park and said "can you please read the number plate of the car in the middle at the back there?"

A simple enough request .. except that there were four cars in a line. So I politely asked "err .. there's four cars! Which one is the 'one in the middle?'"

To my surprise he got a bit arsey and snapped back "the one in the MIDDLE of the three towards the left!!!"

Oh right .. four cars in a line .. how silly of me to not realise that YOU couldn't see the one on the right. Maybe my eye sight was better than his! Still passed though Surprised

Chris.

I have only just started wearing my glasses on my bike (at night), the only difference now is, they steam up when I first set off so I cannot see anything... so really safe!!! Shocked

Worth pointing out that if you fail the eye-test portion of mod2 (is that when they do it these days?), they won't just stop you taking the test, they'll suspend your licence on the spot and you won't get it back until you've had a medical.

It's not a question of whether you're safe or not, it's whether the DL196 was issued correctly.

The compulsory basic training must consist of the elements below. If your riding school didn't do that, they are not just shit, they're breaking the law.

Fortunately, it's nigh on impossible for a copper to prove that you didn't receive the correct training (unless they were following you from the start!), but it doesn't mean it's good practice. If you've not received the full training, perhaps you should consider demanding a refund. Even if you've got your full licence Wink

Note that the eyesight test is a 'must', not a 'may'. Also, note that the on-road portion must be at least two hours.

ELEMENT A - INTRODUCTION
1. Trainees must be told and must understand:-
the aims of the approved training course
the importance of having the right equipment and clothing

2. Trainees’ eyesight must be tested. Trainees must be able to read, in good daylight, a vehicle registration mark containing letters and figures 79.4mm high at a distance of 20.5 metres (with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn).

ELEMENT B - PRACTICAL ON SITE TRAINING
Trainees must receive practical on site training at the conclusion of which they must fulfil the following requirements, that is to say they must:

be familiar with the motorcycle, its controls and how it works;
be able to carry out basic machine checks to a satisfactory standard and be able to take the bike on and off the stand satisfactorily;
be able to wheel the machine around to the left and right showing proper balance and bring the motorcycle to a controlled halt by braking; be able to start and stop the engine satisfactorily.

ELEMENT C - PRACTICAL ON SITE RIDING
Trainees must undertake practical on site riding at the conclusion of which they must be able to: -
ride the machine under control in a straight line and bring the machine to a controlled halt;
ride the machine round a figure of eight circuit under control;
ride the machine slowly under control;
carry out a U-turn manoeuvre satisfactorily;
bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency;
carry out controlled braking using both brakes;
change gear satisfactorily;
carry out rear observation correctly;
carry out simulated left and right hand turns correctly using the Observation-Signal-Manoeuvre (OSM) and Position-Speed-Look (PSL) routines.

ELEMENT D - PRACTICAL ON ROAD TRAINING
1. Before undertaking practical on road riding trainees must be instructed in the matters set out in paragraphs 2 and 3 below and achieve the objectives mentioned therein.

2. Trainees must understand the following:-

the need to be clearly visible to other road users (the use of conspicuity aids);
the importance of knowing the legal requirements for riding on the road;
why motorcyclists are more vulnerable than most road users;
the need to drive at the correct speed according to road and traffic conditions;
the importance of knowing the Highway Code;
the need to ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road users;
the need to use rear observation at appropriate times;
the need to assume the correct road position when riding;
the need to leave sufficient space when following another vehicle;
the need to pay due regard to the effect of varying weather conditions when riding.

3. Trainees must be aware of:
the effect on a vehicle of the various types of road surface that can be encountered;
the dangers of drug and alcohol use;
the consequences of aggressive attitudes when riding;
the importance of hazard perception.

ELEMENT E - PRACTICAL ON ROAD RIDING
1. Trainees must undertake on road riding for a period of not less than two hours. They must (subject to paragraph 2 below) encounter all the following traffic situations and demonstrate their ability to handle each one competently and safely:-
Roundabouts
Junctions
Pedestrian crossings
Traffic lights
Gradients
Bends
Obstructions

2. Trainees must also repeat the following exercises in normal road conditions:-
carry out a U-turn manoeuvre satisfactorily;
bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency.

Nope, not just guidelines, it's the law. It's the work of 5 minutes to whip out the surveyor tape, measure 20.5m and make a mark on the floor with some chalk. If a riding school can't even be arsed to do something as simple as that, then they shouldn't be in business.
