The service light has just lit up on my dash in my car. It's got 88k miles on now, and I'm not sure what a service would consist of in the car. Just an oil and filter change?

Car's a Ford Cougar V6.

Small service is just oil & oil filter,air filter,plugs,and check all the fluids while your on,general check of brake pads...

When did it last have a cambelt change?

It's got a cam chain, so should last a fair while yet!

Oh well,should be just a basic service then...

I think it has to be linked to a garage computer to get the light turned off (well my megane has to be).

That's one of few cars i've never owned/driven.

have a read of the owners manual. THe service light came on in our transit and there was a procedure in there for resetting the light that involved holding a pedal down and turning the ingition on. It hadnt been on before (about 88K at this time) and hasnt been on since.

As for what you do to the car, I would certianly think that the following would do nicely if you only just got the car or its not had a good going over for a while.

Oil + filter
Air filter
Fuel filter
Plugs
Brake clean (i presume discs on yours so its easy enough)

I do tend to go overboard on serving compared to some though, but the way I see it, is that its not going to cause any problems.

The cougar should be on 10k intervals. The 80k service is oil and filter plus pollen filter. The 90k is all that plus air filter. Its due spark plugs every 60k. Its due a brake fluid change every 24 months regardless of the mileage.
