Hi there guys

Over the past few months iv been working on my project supermoto. When i first bought it off a farm lad for £200 it was practically dead, hardly any compression, really smokey, always cut out, no power what so ever, choked up etc and was cosmetically terrible. The gears selected horribly, the clutch was on its way out, exhaust mounting studs sheared off and bent mounts...and many more problems.

So instead of paying £££ for a full engine rebuild and gearbox/clutch repair i picked up bargain 2006 malossi engine off ebay for £190, fitted that and also replaced the cdi with the newer leonelli one as the standard ducati cdi wouldn't work with the newer engine. Got it fitted and running after a few hours but it was still choking up horrible and cutting out so i stripped down and cleaned the carb, replaced all the oil coolant and fuel but still no luck so i fitted the dellorto 21mm big bore carb and it seemed to fix it.

The trouble i have at the mo is when i leave it ticking over the idling speed seems to change by itself and will sometimes be sitting there revving its arse off and then the revs will just drop right down to the point where it cuts out. Another weird thing it starts first thing in the morning with no choke on what so ever, does that sound like its running too rich? and when im driving it, it will usually choke up and run rough and spluttery until the revs reach around 6-8000, what would cause this??

Thanks guys

Jon

The leonelli ignition is the older system, and went over to Ducati ignition on the later models... so youve taken a step backwards there really, but as long as it works for now it doesnt matter.

Yes it sounds like it needs setting up properly, if youve got the £££ then get it properly set up on a dyno.

It wont have much power low down and will seem a little lifeless until it reaches the power band, its a high revving cylinder kit youve got and not designed for everyday use, its a copy of a racing kit, so needs working hard and the revs to be kept high. Once you get the hang of it, and get used to what seems like trashing it, youll find its better... but before you start doing it make sure its set up right.
