just bought the bike so I'm still getting used to it.

can someone explain how the oil light works? It comes on when I switch the ignition on. Do i just keep topping up the oil until the light suddenly goes off? Or do I need to add oil, start the bike, stop it and then check the light again?Sorry for the noob question.

Cheers

bandit 6 yeah? I imagine it's not different for the 12 either.

Light comes on to tell you that there isn't oil everywhere. When you crank the engine with the starter oil goes into teh engine and it goes off. If the light is on while the engine is running then you are going to break things. I generally just use it as a way to gauge time passing between attempts to start in cold weather with choke Laughing

As much as saying ignore it is a bad idea, it should turn on when you put ignition on, then go out when it starts. Bout it really, if it does that, then ignore it. Just check your sight glass every tankful of petrol, My bandit and a friend at works both burn oil reasonably quickly.

It's a pressure light. It's on with a dead engine because the pump isn't turning. When you start it, the oil light should go out PDQ as the pump pressurizes the system. If it doesn't go out, or comes on with the engine running then you have serious problems! The oil level should be maintained between the marks on the sight glass, checked with the engine cold.

so as long as the light goes out when I start the bike up then im ok? Thats whats happening to hopefully all is good. The oil level seems fine. In the owners book however it says "run the bike for 2 mins then check the level." But this seems inaccurate as a bike run for 2 minutes after one night in the garage will be warmer than a bike run for 2 mins after a winter stood outside for a month. anyway, just thought I'd make that point

thanks for the help Thumbs Up

EDIT: just read pyros post. thanks!!

Running it for two minutes is for when you have done an oil change so it's distributed round the engine and "pooling" where it should, the oil level could drop in the sump and may need topping up. Could also apply when the bike has been laid up for a while. Doesn't matter if it's warm or cold when you do it.
