1st Learner Legal bike.

Hello everyone, after a few weeks of unregistered browsing of these forums i have decided to make an account!


Finally after a while of nagging i have managed to get my parents to agree to me buying a road legal 125 as i can't afford a car at the moment.

I have prior bike experience as i own a cheap 175 4 stroke crosser bike. It cost £600 but it went quite fast for how much it cost new .

On the road i was looking at 2 bikes as possibilities for my 1st learner legal.

1 condition of the comprimise with the parents is that it can't be a super sports bike, so my dreams of owning an RS or NSR have been smashed.

The 2 bikes i have lined up are the Honda XL125V or the DT125X

I prefer the DT125X but i don't know which is actually better. Could the hallowed members of BCF enlighten me.

Are you buying brand new? The XL125V (Varadero) is pretty expensive brand new but if you're looking at a second hand one it should be a decent buy. Pretty nice looking things, though might be a bit slower than the DT due to it's weight. And might be a bit more expensive to maintain because it's got more plastics if you drop it and twice the cylinders.

No i wouldn't be buying new. I would be looking for something on a 2002 plate or a 2003 if my budget can stretch to it.

I am just not sure on which would be the best option for me as a first road bike. The Varadero looks quite tall which could be a problem as i am only 5'8".

Seat hight is a very big concern i have.

Another thing is about the 2 stroke oil. Does the DTX have an aouto oiler or will i have to make premix?

Pretty sure the yammy isn't premix!

Always liked the look of the varadero myself, but even second hand they're a bit dear for what they are.

As with every other reply on these forums, get som't cheap and simple like a CG, and save the £££ for a big bike!

2-3 years is a long-ass time to be on a 125 man.

Pretty sure most of us said we'd stick it out that long then go for the test.. Couple of months down the line....

haha fair... None of the other bikers at my college are into metal!

Still think you'll be aching for more sooner than 3 years but fair enough. I'd probably go for the DT in that case, being 2t the power'll probably keep you entertained for longer..

Has anyone had any experience with the Derbie Senda 125SM?

Looks really good but it is a four stroke, so it may be abit of a slouch compared to the DT.

Well, thanks for the help guys but i think i have found my bike!

A yamaha XT125X seems to be a really good bike and i went and had a look at one in Newcastle today. Thought it was a lush bike and felt good when i was trying it out in the shop.



Now just got to sort things out and i will be out on the road
