this has probley been discussed before i came along, but whats the best oil (semi synth) you can run on, i mean real royalty oil, not the cheap shit halfords sell for cg's,

If you are talking about engine oil, then according to most of the oil producers, then the semi synthetics produced by Total, Esso and BP are the best as they drill their own oil and sell to the other producers.

If you are looking at 2 stroke, then a good synthetic from Total, BP or Motul apparently.

This information was given to me at an oil seminar I went to a couple of years ago organised by the oil producing firms.

Castrol GPS is considered to be pretty good for a semi-synth for hi-revving sports bikes.
Whether that actually means it's good or not is another matter.

I was always told to use Mobil 1 as that was the best??!!

Nope,
Its just that quality performance engines with dry clutches work best on fully synth (Ducati's etc. ) and some other quality performance bikes work best with fully synth... I think that Triumph Reccomend it! Wink A *lot* of other bikes work best on semi synth.

Depends on the engine really. An oil cooled 400cc engine would be better off on semi synth, whereas a 900cc sportsbike engine might be better on fully synth. Or, vice versa. Best just to go with the dealer/manufacturer reccomendation IMO.

[edit] Also you can't mix types IE Semi synth with fully synth. Smile Triumph do recommend Mobil 1 but apparently its identical to the car Mobil 1 of the same weight. The only difference is that the car one is cheaper.Wink [edit]

Castrol GP and GPS along with the Total brand are considered to be at the top end of the market, with Motul being 1st division rather than premiership quality.

The trouble with using a fully synthetic oil is that firstly you cannot mix it with other types of oil, and they are designed to work at extreme temperatures (racing and the like) because of the viscosity (thickness).

Semi synthetic is designed to operate over a wider range scale, and in the colder months it will get to the top end of the engine quicker than the thinner synthetic so its (semi s) protective qualities are better on a road bike.

When I was in the trade, I used to use all the different brands, Putoline, Silkolene, Duckhams and the like, and I thought they were all the same until I went on the seminar organised by the oil companies. On my return, I tried both Total and Castrol and could not believe the difference, it was amazing the transformation of the engine, and I have stuck with these two ever since.

All modern oils by and large are pretty good I would hasten to add, it all comes down to how much of a difference you can notice, because over the average age of a motorcycle, the mileage doesn't get high enough on most to be really noticeable!

Not quite true. The viscosity is indicated by the number on the package. A 10W40 fully synthetic has basically the same viscosity as a 10W40 cheapo oil from Tescos. Fully synthetic oils tend to need less additives to reach the same viscosity range, which tends to mean that you land up with an oil that takes longer to break down in use.

Plenty of cars specify fully synthetic oil. Indeed on most cars with a turbo you could rapidly land up trashing the turbochargers by running normal oil due to the very high temperatures.

Not really, both can be true. The rating (ie, 10W40) of the oil does determine the viscosity of the oil when new at normal temperatures. As the synthetic oils need less additives to get the wide viscosity range, and the additives wear out, then the conventional oil will stop matching its specified viscosity at a lower mileage. Also what they do when pushed outside their normal design limits (such as extreme temperature) is likely to change.
