Received a letter today from the local council with regards to excessive motorbike engine noise Razz

I basically start my bike say 7.45-8am on the drive and let it idle for a few minutes until its up to temperature. I dont sit there revving the tits off it, it just sits there.

The micron race can is strictly not MOT fit but its not even that loud...these neighbours complain left, right and centre and last time they called the police on us saying we were throwing eggs at their house!! they're are the local complain-alot's and I knew eventually they would go off on one about the recent biking activities at our house.

I so dont want to make out as if they have won and change my ways...no one else complains...i'm tempted just to push the bike on the road in front of their house and start it there...at least the noise is not coming from our property then Laughing

Any ideas of what could happen if the complaints carry on??

Have a quiet word and tell them if they continue to harrass you they'll start having their windows panned in.

Only if you're rich, powerful and/or famous. In which case you're allowed to make as much noise as you like 24/7.

Or own/operate an airport.

Well as bigger p-i-a as they are, do you really need to let it idle so long.
Just start it and ride off, it will soon warm up on the move.
Somethimes it not so much the loud noise, its the pitch its at thats the problem.
Have a word with them and explain that you are not trying to upset them with the bike, and its all legal, that you will limit it as best you can.
I would also ask them why they can't bring their issues to you, instead of going to the council.
We have a guy with a HD near us and he does the same, as much as i love bikes its a p-i-a when he does it at that time in the morning when you are on your day off and trying to sleep.

exactly as iooi says. i reckon if they haven't got the guts to let you know how they feel about the noise face to face before going to teh authorities then they will probably take no further action if go to their door yourself and politely explain to them that everythings legal and you're not trying to disturb them and do try to keep noise to a minimum.. as long as your nice about it i reckon they must be the type that don't want any confrontations.

I certainly wouldn't go out my way though unless i thought myself that it was genuinely a bit loud.. i wouldn't for instance push it down the road or out of the street before i started the bike.

Just one of those things.. i would even stick a legal exhaust on it and go to the police station of whatever and let them see/hear for themselves.. that way i can't see them following their complaints too much either, perhaps. Doubt they'd even be interested though to be honest.

You could always write back saying that as far as you are aware, the noise level is within acceptable limits and invite them to come round to confirm this is the case.

Ball's in their court then, they either have to spend valuable interfering letter writing time checking the noise levels in your neighbours house as you start the bike or STFU.

Write, don't phone. Keep a copy. It shows you are being reasonable.

Complain about them, doesn't matter what it is you can even make it up . just complain like mad. keep it simple keep it within the realms of believability. Just complain.
ideas would be watching you in a menacing way, noise from their vehicle, not painting their house, using others bins for their rubbish, looking at children. that sort of thing.

Jokes aside some valid points there...

I basically let the bike idle up to temp (43o+) as advised by the seller...he didnt really explain why but just said let it get up to temp before i wack it in gear...an instructor at my bike school told me the same thing last weekend...something to do with the auto choke and damaging the gears (?)

Anyways I think I would of taken it more lightly if they just spoke to me...we have nice neighbours on one side and then the other we have these twisted losers...these neighbours are known to be one of those who just hate everyone else, playing the victim all the time...last time they complained to the PCSO's i was parking in front of their house...bare in mind it was on a public road and they dont have a lowered kerb/driveway I thought this was stupid...the reason for it? it blocked their view of the park!!

I would love to confront them but i rather not just in case they call the police and say i'm harrasing them...I will just send a letter in response...

As mentioned though its not like i'm doing it ridiculously early and its quite hard not to ever disturb them since the 3 occupants dont work for a living

I think ghe social needs to know about all the work that they do, the abuse of the system that they get upto and the like. make them defend themselves and not attack others.

Yep had noticed how he very weather orientated to his biking....

Op, I think you will find if they complain too much then the police will ignore them, or if they do come out and talk to you, they will not take too much interest.
Council will have sent letter as its election time soon, and i guess they will have talked to someone up for election Wink
I guess this lot are all of a certain age, that no longer need to work, so its very early for them... Thumbs Down

some people say that riding off and keeping it at low revs for the first mile or so, is better for your engine than leaving it running to warm up,

i know the great oracle kickstart takes this view

Meh,

I like being a prick and a cunt from time to time revving the bike starting up, but i would like to have consideration for my neighbours.
They see me in the weekend washing my bike, adding new bits, fixing stuff, maintaining it ( i live in flats with parking at the back). The last thing i want to do is piss them off.

Now my full system is anything BUT legal Rolling Eyes, i agree it's loud. My neighbours are also pretty old, a few of them a nosey cunts and used to complain a lot when my landlord first moved in about different manner of things, but they're also pretty vigilant - in which case if i'm a good boy, it swings on my side. They look out for the bike in the back yard etc, generally asking how things are going. The fact that i extend common courtesy to them by not starting it in the back yard makes our relationship much more enjoyable and friendlier. I would think it would be different if i put it on choke for 1 min, let it idle for another min whilst i put my gloves and lid on, then drove off.

What i do is I come downstairs fully kitted up, remove the disk lock, cover and chain, wheel the bike to the front (through the entrance passageway from the car park), put it on choke, start it and ride VERY slowly away - keep revs below 3k - the choke is set at about that rev range anyway, so all i need to do is let out the clutch. Once i'm clear of my street, choke off and keep revs low. That way the bike is level meaning you don't get deprivation of oil in the rightmost cylinders which is what would happen if you left it on the stand. I'd get pissed off myself if i got woken up every 7:45 cos i wanted to hear my IL4 idling for 3 mins in the back of my house day in day out!

It's pretty painless and all i do is piss off the bakers down the road ... no neighbours annoyed.

Well i was advised to do the warm up thing for gearbox reasons...i have noticed it bangs into gear harder at lower temps??

Well it cant be too early for them if I normally hear them screaming their heads off when i'm in the bathroom getting ready...plus they dont work because they're too old to...i believe they are on disability benefits of some sort...

Vin wrote:

Why not?? if it was any other neighbour they would come up to me and just talk to me about it...I would then just apologise and change my ways...

These loonies though just stand at the window shuffling the curtain hoping i'd notice them...if they didn't start with all this hassle and pointless complaints in the first place I would probably just compromise with them...sod that for a laugh now though...

I'll start the bike on the public road next time...lets see how they can complain about that...especially when i'm not doing it outside the illegal times

Me:

Get kitted up.

Lock garage door.

Turn ignition on, click it nto gear, start it up (FI) and go immediately. Not quickly but I don't hang about to wake everyone up.

You can immediately bin the "go fuck your neighbours" comments from the typical vigilantes, just be considerate for other people. Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

Well i dont let it sit on idle for no reason...like i said I'm only doing what I was advised to. Plus I'm obv not waking them up Thumbs Up

We always started off on the wrong terms with these neighbours ever since they called the police on my a my friends for something we knew nothing about...when the PCSO's come around, I qoute "they don't seem to be all there in the head" Laughing

Thing i live on a main road so no matter how far I push the bike to start it, it will be infront of someones house...oh well I'll do all i can to avoid the "excessive" noise in the morning but when it comes to the weekend afternoons the old farts can suck dick if they still think its too noisy...

Do a burnout on their drive!

Why not just start it in gear. No damage to the gears then as you aren't having to engage the gear with the increased idle speed.

Start it in gear, ride off, problem solved.

They are designed to be ridden from cold anyway, just keep it below 1/3 revs until it's warmed up.

My neighbors forever bitched about my rf starting even when it had a stock can and was quieter than the old mans diesel that used to moan.

Well one night the lads showed up on the bikes.

11pm, 5 bikes with race cans revving the tits off to get me to come out side. Windows every where vibrating, dogs barking the lot.

Needless to say the whole street was out and looking. Cool

No one complained about my bike after that Laughing

There is no need to warm it up, Just oput it into 1st before you start it pull in the clutch and rock it forwards to free the clutch off. Its only the thick oil making the clutch drag that makes it clunk into gear. It won't do any damage to the gearbox at all as most bikes with wet clutches do it.
