Hi,

So I've had my NSR for a while and passed my A2 last year but I don't quite have the funds to get my dream bike (CBR 600 RR) so I was wondering if anybody could recommend something I could jump up to on a A2 Licence for the meantime.....

A2 = restricted to 33bhp bikes
Currenty = derestricted NSR-125

My budget would be up to 2k.

Thanks!

To be honest there are not many bikes that are 33bhp.

You usually have to restrict a bike.

Which isn't too hard, you can just about get restrictors for any bike.

But it does make it hard, if you see a bike and like it, to be legal, you have to restrict it before you ride it home or have a mate to ride it back and then do it etc.

I had a ER5 which was restricted to 33bhp when I was in my 2 years and that was absolutely fine, it topped out at about 90, but it still got there quickly.

I also had my Z750s at 33bhp and that was okay too, absolutely fine for cruising.

https://www.bat-motorcycles.co.uk/33bhp.asp - there's a list of bikes that are 33bhp or less on that page, along with a list of bikes that have restrictor kits available. You might find that helpful.

Honda Bros 400 seems to be quite popular for under 33bhp that doesn't need restricting (or at least from what I've heard - not sure what it's like as I've never owned one but lots of people seem happy with them).

I ride an XJ600 restricted. It's all good. Restriction not made a huge difference. Restricting it was very easy - got the restrictorxs of ebay for a few quid and fitted them in about 20 mins (and I'm not mechanically minded).

The Bros 400 is a very good and capable little bike. Hard to find though

If you can look past image you could get a very solid 500 (CB500, GS500, GPZ500 etc) for under a grand, would be cheap to run for the year untill your on your full licence, Coming up from a 125 even a NSR it would be a nice little power jump, and as long as you dont buy a shed and look after it you should get back nearly all the money you paid for it which can go towards your CBR600 next year...

I personally dident restrict my 500 as it seems a bit pointless, If you get pulled for suspection of no restrictors you will get a producer, at which point just pay a garage/mechanic or yourself to make up an official looking letter stating you had the restrictors fitted, remember you only have to prove to a desk administrator at the police station of your choosing that you are restricted, not that scary looking traffic copper that doesent believe you...

Depends what you want the bike for, etc.

You could get an early R6 or SRAD GSXR + restricters for that money - similar kind of idea to the CBR-RR, just not as pretty!

I also ride an xj600 restricted.

I got fleeced and paid the garage to get the 'paperwork' and stuff and it cost me £150.

It's slow-er but still fast enough especially for me coming from a 125. Main problem is had some fuel starvation but sorted that out now, it's just a little harder to start at times.
