To ride down with him on the M40, Junction 10 on 15th April, to the Ace Cafe.

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/videos/2008/april/apr0208charleyboormaninterviewonnewtvshow/?&R=EPI-99594

An interesting ride...Ireland to Sydney...

I might go down on the 15th of August - it's better than being at work!

I wish him no harm, but i will leave the ego stroking to the rest of you....

I remember seeing him at Boxhill as he was floating around. We caught each others eye and I remember the look on his face, kind of like a frightened rabbit...it was either fear that he might be recognized, or it was fear he wouldn't, I still can't decide.

I don't think he does as such. I've read his book - he's worked pretty hard as a painter / decorator (not the most successful actor) and when he had the opportunity to do these adventures he jumped at the chance - and they do raise money for charity and people get good entertainment watching him. Long way round has risen the profile of bikers so for us it's only a good thing.

He's not some superhero saving the children and I don't think he pretends to be. He rides cos he loves to, he's had a great chance to get sponsored and get support, he's taken it - fair play to him.

I would go down but I'm at uni!

The way I see it, he's never been poor, he's had a fairly well off upbringing, but has always loved bikes, but never had enough money to go for what he dreamed of (Long way round/Dakar) but made friends with Ewan, who is super rich.

I reckon they both love bikes, and Charley sort of talked Ewan into doing it, and it proved sucessful. And it's given him the fame and money to carry on doing these things, with or without Ewan - who has other priorities.

If life gave me the money and lifestyle to be able to dissapear off around the world on bikes, I almost certainly would, and I'm sure many here would.

He is putting an appeal out to join him on the ride, this will then be depicted as a spontaneous turn out of supporters by the TV show. It reminds me of Jammie Oliver and his pretend friends.
Pair of tossers.

I dont know if anyone here reads the "Riders Digest" its a free courier magazine you can pick up from the ace and other places, this month had a good article on basically this, the phenomenon of the risk-adverse society, the gist being in days gone by men were applauded for going out on risky adventures to prove their bravery, now they must do it under the guise of "charity", thats more what i object to. (I dont have a scanner or i would upload it)

If i had the money of course i would do it, but if you think im going to spend what little i do to congratulate some public-school boy on whoring his next psudo-adventure/publicity event, naa george Razz

As for the long way round/down, The first one i did like, the second one was far to commercialised, it became unwatchable for me when ewans wife jumped in on the act...

As for promoting awareness about bikes, All i can see that it has done is raise the stock of BMW, and when im working in central london slow me down somewhat due to the amount of BMW "Adventure touring" bikes with full touratech panniers, and matching ewan+charly BMW textile suits, they cant ride, they hold up others bikers and it would be safer/better for everyone if they just stayed in their 5 series's.

Oh and i nearly gagged when i saw Ewans "Davidoff" perfume advert... Sick

But i do apologise if i am being overly cynical... Im sure they are lovely people that have a genuine interest in bikes, i just cant muster up the excitement about it any more... Neutral

That was revoltingly gay, I now refuse to watch Train Spotting out of principle.

Nah - it's just the same few people who like to knock people they don't actually know.

You should have seen the posts that were aired when 'Long Way Down' was first broadcast - I've never seen so much prejudice in one place!

I nearly died after reading that article.

Literally, I was in the bath, reading riders digest (really good read btw, shame it's so rare to grab one), when the mirror fell off and broke into the bath cutting me up some :p. With some pieces a foot in length I'm lucky one didn't land the wrong way through me. I got little more than scratches / cuts!

But I shall always remember what I was doing at the time, reading riders digest Smile

If you have a scanner it might be a good idea to scan/upload the article, assuming its not covered in blood/bath water

Its not knocking them as people, Personally i dont like the fact their trip was portrayed as some kind of "Perilous adventure", by all means do the trip, but dont make out it is something it simply is not. I mean why did they even have panniers on their bikes? If i had the money to have support crews with me in numerous 4x4's surely put the stuff in the cars and enjoy the ride even more...

I think the only positive thing to take from the whole LWR/LWD series is that it introduced me to Mondo Enduro, Terra Circa, and Horizons Unlimited, and in a round-about way to Lois on the loose; so I suppose you could say even the "fake" adventurers have a silver lining.

And no, I'll not be joining Charley on the M40...

I don't understand why they needed all those other vehicles though. Perhaps one van with the camera equipment in was necessary, nothing else - it's not exactly dangerous if they can just throw the bikes on the back of a pickup and call it a day when the going gets too tough.

The prosecution rests, my Lord.

But let's not go over old ground again.

Why not? There is much pleasure to be taken in taking the p out of thesr clowns. Provided they keep wagging their willys at us we have the right to shout "Pencil Dick" back at them.

My dad rode 14,000 kms on his BMW F650 from Dubai back to England through i think it was 12 different countries. It took him just over 3 weeks. He didn't have 2 SUVs following him with food and medical supplies. He was on his own and not on National Television.

That's the way a biking adventure is supposed to be, he took a camera to get some photos and kept a diary and that's it. In a few years me and him have plans to go round the world as well but are we going to making millions of pounds out of it? Fuck no, we'll be doing it because we bloody well want to.

For me it is. I fucking hate McGregor with a passion.
Why?
For kids my age, Star Wars was our life (any kid my age who didn't like Star Wars is a gheyer and therefore their opinion doesn't count).
The 3 'modern' Star Wars films were shite. McGregor was shit as Obi Wan. I can't now watch the 'first' 3 Star Wars films, because whenever i see Sir Alec (who is now probably turning in his grave), i can't help but think of McGregor and his 'Och master, what are we gunna dee noo?' bullshit.
However, thanks to that perfume ad, everyone now sees McGregor for the bum-loving twat he really is.
