quick question, what do people have against fair weather riders, or weekend warriors?

I would probably class myself as a fair weather rider, why ride the bike in bullshit weather, use the car so much more practical.

Reading peoples replys on the, "what do you hate about riding" thread, fair weather bikers and weekend warriors popped up quite alot. Why do other riders dislike them so much. And as for the wearing full leathers but not having worn in sliders thing, so what atleast there wearing leathers right, most everyday riders I see are in jeans, trainers and a textile jacket at the most.

Whats your take on this? Why such hatred towards the fair weather, weekend warriors?

If you have never rode 200 miles in high wind and rain with broken knuckles and ribs you will never understand why we look down on you.
You have never known the pleasure of sitting on a saddle covered in snow, you have not had to concentrate on a road full of fallen trees in the fog and you have never had to let your tyres down to 5 psi because of the ice on the road just to get to work.
Ride in those conditions and you earn the right to ride on a summers day.

i actually enjoy riding in shit conditions, not because i can say im hard, but simply because i am Very Happy i like the feeling of drifting in the snow, and will actively go in search of adverse conditions.
riders who refuse to ride in bad weather, deserve to be looked down apon Very Happy not as muchas a car driver. but still looked down on Very Happy
lol, just kidding, i dont mind weekend warriors really, but they are the ones who increase our insurance rates, as the warmer weather hit, more rider who have retired o the cages for the winter come out, and they think they are till as good as the end of the previous year. and end up sacking it,

When you courier 10 hours a day, 5 days a week come rain or shine and get held up by someones who is on the latest shiney sportsbike because they cant ride as well as you it is slighly frustrating /takes off the hat of arrogance. I mean i would stop for these people if they were in need, but just as drivers look at l-plate drivers with distain, those of us who ride all the time regardless of rain or snow and especially those of us who earn our living on the road look at you on your bike that has been polished more than it has been ridden as pretenders for lack of a better word. Thats just how it is, by all means choose the easy option of a car but in doing so you forfeit your right to complain when you get the piss taken out of you for being a fair weather biker... IMHO...

Edited for correctness, I hate it riding in london, in fact the majority or L platers are better than sports bikers in london. Good thing about winter is they aren't about. They don't like it when you undertake them and filter faster than them when you have about a 3rd of the power muffs and a topbox.

Not quite, i've had a car for the last 8 years and for the last two years i've had a bike and which do i choose every morning apart from when theres deep snow? The bike of course. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Simply because i like riding, i like riding when its pissing down with rain. as long as you have decent kit its not a problem, you can still enjoy yourself riding in shit weather.
I have no personal problem with weekend warriors really but they do tend to get in your way here in milton keynes at times, or do stupid things to try and prove themselves. Laughing Laughing

I;ve only been riding for like 2-3 months, and yesterday i only got four hours sleep, woke up was bout to take my bike to uni, saw it was like 5 degrees and hail stone, i thought i best take the tube, i think if conditions are not safe for you, theres no worries in taking another option. though that being said i will never take the tube again at rush hour! ever

As said before, a lot of fair weather riders are dangerous riders. They put their bikes away in October, bring them out in April and think they are as good as they were last year. They are not, they take chances, ride too fast around corners etc because their riding skills are rusty.

I have a car as well, but I have chosen to use the bike over winter to go to work and even when it has been bad weather have got the bike out for a pleasure ride.

Hummmm this is very interesting. People actually enjoy riding in the rain and snow! Now I didn't see that coming. I don't think I'm afraid of riding in the rain or snow, its just cold and wet, not going to harm you, Im just afraid of laying the bike down.

Where's the fun in riding in those conditions, you can't do anything, can't push the bike hard in rain and snow. Is it the thrill of getting from a-b alive that makes you do it.

As for weekend warriors holding the more experienced everyday rider up is to be expected though right, you ride everyday, your constantly improving your riding style/technique. If your not quicker than the fair weather riders then it is you who can't ride.

And as for the whole litre bike thing, so what right, thats all personal choice. I'm a fairweather rider but by no means did I just jump on my r1. I had a zxr400, gsxr600, gsxr750, and now an r1. And yes I clean and polish it all the time. Just want it to be pristine and well maintained.

In my opinion the excuses so far are pretty shitty, riding in shit conditions by no means makes you more of a rider than someone who likes to hit the twistys on a sunny day.

T'was only a matter of time before this cropped up again.. Rolling Eyes

Fair weather bikers are a fairly recent phenomenon, since before our recent illusion of grandeur and supposed wealth, motorcycles were a primitive but cheap form of transport. Easily worked on and accessible transport meant many chose bikes because of cost. A big overcoat and a set of goggles were all you needed for a snowy ride to the shipyard for another ten hour day...

Nowadays many choose to own motorcycles purely for the thrills, using other forms of transport when the weather isn't so great, or just to take the brunt of load carrying / family things etc. It is deemed today that a car is a necessary tool for the modern family. They can afford to use these machines purely on days when biking is most fun.

Meanwhile younger riders or those who do not necessarily need or want a car, or those that cannot afford both and choose a bike over a car, ride on the roads in all weathers. These riders will encounter the worst the British weather can throw at them, often clock up many dreary miles trudging up sodden motorways or A-roads whilst their undergarments are most certainly soaked. Others, who are often found to have chosen a bike over a car, or those who still own a car but choose to use the bike 99% of the time, can grit their teeth, wear their fully waterproof gear, turn up the heated grips and carry on in a level of comfort our older biking relatives could only dream of.

There was always going to be friction when the two groups met.

"Why should we put up with all the shite the whole year, only to get the power rangers swan up to bike meets on sunny Sundays on mint sportsbikes? They're not real bikers!"

"Why don't they just get a car and use the bike like we do? They can't enjoy the winter, they must be mad!"

Well the argument will continue until the next credit crunch, when those that own bikes as 'toys' will sell them, and those that use them year round will stay on them. C'est la vie and all that. Karma

Meanwhile I suggest we try to get on and continue to try to support all bikers, especially those in distress by the roadside, in these nanny state times when biking's future is most under threat.

Bleugh I'm rambling and work's slow. Razz

Very true. I was talking to this Sri Lankan lass about how I want to ride around Sri Lanka on a motorbike this summer and she looked at me funny and said "Why? You can easily drive a car".

She was flabbergasted that I would actually choose to ride, rather than drive.

Because over there, bikes are still the 'lower' form of transport. It's all the low paid workers who use them as they can't afford a car.

I passed my car test in 1980 and about a year later decided to start riding bikes. rode in all conditions even london to nottingham in january in the snow setting off on a L plate 125 at 4pm and not getting there till 11pm because i had to keep stopping because of the cold. when I thnk back to that trip I think I must have been mad as I also had a car and could have driven there is warmth and safety in just over 2 hours.

nowdays ( and because i have a metal hip) I prefer to ride in situations I enjoy which usually means warm & dry conditions. and always wear protective clothing. I feel I have nothing to prove to anyone and if I someone does not consider me a 'real biker' then so what

Yep, same here.

I rode 7 / 8 years come rain snow wind etc... day in day out as it was my only transport.

Now I only venture out if it's dry & not 'too' cold.

I'm still a 'real' biker. Wink Thumbs Up

I bet there's a high number of fair weather riders that could beat many an everyday riders arse on here.

There also seems to be a mixed opinion on what a fair weather rider is when this topic ever floats up. So if a fair weather rider is someone who only comes out in summer when it's dry, then what does that make the one's who only come out lets say every other weekend but all year round?

People suggest that fair weather riders hold them up - Does that make you a better rider than them or just an impatient buggar who actually has a point in where you are going?

It seems to be a common thing in any area of biking and probably many other interests/hobbies that people have to find a reason to put others down to make themselves appear better.

I ride in all weathers and have done for a years, no way by choice as I don't drive yet but as soon as a car arrives in my name I'll be taking that more often than the bike if it's horrid out. It doesn't make you a hardcore biker to choose to go out in crappy weather to 'feel the buzz of getting home safely'. You might have many a tale of riding in the shit but that's either because your daft or just didn't have a choice at the time.

So to sum up my blabbering, it's all in aid of boosting one's ego.
