Not just you, happens sometimes on commutes.

Probably a bad thing but repetitiveness has these effects...

In the car almost always, on the bike hardly ever as I find the whole experience far more absorbing and requiring almost constant concentration. In fact on Friday morning it was quite foggy and by the time I got to work I was mentally tired, with a "thousand yard stare". Shocked

happens to me sometimes aswell on straight roads. i can just drift off thinking about something then i realise i cant remember the last 20 seconds or so.

quite worrying thinking about whether i would have reacted if the brake lights of the car in front came on

It's not uncommon. You don't need to remember your journey, so you don't - that's not to say that you weren't paying attention at the time. For example, if you go through a set of green traffic lights - do you even think "were they green?"?

Just lately I've been driving the car more, and there have been a few times I've changed lane on the Motorway and then thought about what I did - as you get more experience, it becomes more instinctive.

Ever noticed how you might be 'staring' at something/ in a direction and still taking full notice of everything going on around you ?

Happens the most to me on my way to work in the mornings.

Riding back from Belgium a couple years back i was falling asleep on the motorway as the sun was blazing into my visor. I had to stop at the next services which was a fair few miles. Not nice. Confused

But yeah, sometimes ive had the autopilot thing, only for short distances though.

Often when driving a car, not on the bike though.

Too much concentration required means I don't get that 'auto-pilot' mode like with a car.

Reminds me of that THINK! advert about 'the road you always go down' finishing with 'the legs you will never use' Although yeah, by the time I'm 5 roads from my house I'm already thinking about cooking dinner/what I'm doing that night.

My instructor said 70% of accidents will happen 10mins from your home, and that more percentage of them are fatal than the other 30% if that makes sense.

It's called the "zoned out" effect, I get it all the time on common roads. I don't believe it compromises my safety, my reactions are almost the same as usual, i'm just not thinking about my journey, i'm merely in my zen on the road.

Just because you can't remember where you went or what happened, doesn't mean you wasn't 100% concentrating on the road. There is a clear distinction between concentration and the intake and information on the road.

Don't racers get something similar (Not saying the same) if they are in the 'zone'? They will sometimes get so focused that they lose track of all time, often resulting in near perfect laptimes for a while.

Perhaps it's our brain taking over the controls directly leaving our conscious out of the equation. Very Happy

Yep. I think it's merely the subconscious taking over the conscious.

I mean if you think about it, the subconscious mind is already doing lots of other stuff, gear changes, the amount of throttle needed at any given moment. After a while you don't really consciously think about it.

Which is why especially in the car I forget which gear I am in cause I can't even remember changing gear.

I remember coming back from MotoGP in 2005, from Gloucester onwards on the M5 I was so used to the route I couldn't remember any of the M5 apart from when I saw a police car behind me at 90MPH, panicked a lot, but he passed me, so I went back to my zen state. Very Happy

It is because you are doing this all the time, there are no landmarks in your memory in which to guage the passage of time, it is why work time moves so quickly as nothing happens and thus there are no landmarks.

Thus you devote less memory space to it, and when you get older find it hard to distinguish memories apart and go check for the 2nd time if you locked the door or if the memory you had was a prior memory.

Falling asleep on a bike is a different thing all together,

I used to do a 20 mile stretch of motorway in the car as my commute to work. And after doing it for a couple of months it started happening to me every single day... It was scary! Sometimes in the afternoon I would try and remember just one event that occurred during the commute and I'd quite often come up totally blank.

It began to worry me that I could find myself in an accident so I forced myself to start thinking more consciously. Then it seemed to happen much more infrequently. Since I started riding a bike it's only happened once or twice.

I seem to be much more aware of the journey on a bike.

Sometime I get it on the way from college, normally I get pissed off at myself and force myself to pay more attention. Not done it recently.

I used to find it always happened if I had a fizzy drink (was normally Lucozade) at lunch time... dunno if it was just coincidence or not. But it feels weird, you I feel like I become disconnected from my body, as in I'm not in control over it.
