PostPosted: 22:06 - 09 Apr 2008    Post subject: Back wheel lock and engine revs high? Reply with quote

When i go round a corner and ive gone down a couple of gears when i let the clutch back out and rev the back wheel feels like it locks up and the engine races high to high revs. It slows down fast like ive slammed the brakes on.

Im a new biker so any help on how to ride better would be very helpful considering i took my cbt on an auto and have now moved to a manual.

I dont have trouble with riding, just pulling off is a little slow and then im fine. The only trouble i have is changing down gears.

Im not sure if i am changing down too far into first and thats why its happening as i am already still traveling at a speed.

Thanks.

Also you shouldn't block change... also not doing this would help with you changing down gears to fast.

Clutch in, blip throttle, change down, let clutch out. Make it nice and smooth. Always try to ride nice and smooth.

As you say, when you let the clutch out the revs jump, what you need to be doing is matching your engine speed to what it'll jump too when you engage the clutch.

Becomes second nature with a bit of experience Thumbs Up .

If you`re new to geared bikes...and biking in general...why do you need to drop down so many gears at a corner?and coming from high speed?
The brakes have a purpose mate.

I doubt you`re at the stage yet where you wanna power out of the bends so why don`t you just drop down 1 gear and go round nice and easy?
The roads aren`t race tracks....

There is no such thing as a auto cbt...

One cbt for everything.

Simple, Im 16 so took it on an auto and now have a manual. I wasnt aware you was restricted to paticular transmission types but just engine size and power output.

my guess is hes on a 50cc and need all the power he can get B_A_B :o

and yes wtd you can jump on a geared bike after doing your cbt on a auto. As for block shifting (more than one at a time) i wouldn't really do that untill your use to the bike and know how many gear to knock it down etc etc.

My understanding was complete the CBT on an auto and you may ride an auto on L plates, complete it on a geared and you may ride a geared bike on the road.

You have been assessed as 'safe' by an instructor on a particular style of bike, to ride anything else would be riding against what you have been marked against.

Good point, thanks!

I suppose its just a case of getting used to it and experienced. But i just wondered if there was anything major i was doing wrong as back wheel locking up felt dangerous to me.

Thanks.

Ye hes on a 50 speedbike rep a rs2matrix.
and thats definantly shifting down too many gears,
or simply your dropping the clutch out, i get lock ups if i drop a gear at speed and dont feather the clutch out.

One of the first days i had it, went out for a kain, and dropped from 5th to 3rd, back wheel slide on, so nearly felt it kicking out sideways, but got it back straight and hit it up a gear as it was locked, as to try match the speed, although i think blipping works, although dosnt seem to work for me, maybe im doing it wrong meh.

or as your only on a 50, try get your kneedown and power through the corner Laughing
i quite often take the turn early and keep on the gas, and it then swings out as if i had took it normally and keeps on the gas Very Happy

No if you do a cbt on a TAG 50 you can ride a geared 50 or a geared 125.

As DS55 said there is only 1 CBT.

The place I did mine at had 50cc autos for 16 year olds and Suzuki Van Vans for 17 year olds.

A CBT is a CBT. You're not restricted to a style of bike.

You can be, but it will say on the cbt certificate in the restrictions box.

You won't be restricted to an auto or a manual.

Technically if you complete your CBT on a twist and Go, You are only allowed to ride a twist and go.
Well when I took my CBT that was the rules anyway. As it was stated on the "CBT" papers what you completed the training on. Manual or Auto.

Not sure about now.

BUT I did my CBT on a scooter, And at 17 bought a Honda XL125R.
You never get caught. And if you get a producer, you never have to produce your CBT paper. Just the license. Which doesn't say anything on it about what type of bike you passed on.

As for getting lock up on shift downs. You are just dropping down too many gears. I get lock up on the NC29 if I dont blip the throttle while ive got the clutch pulled in, And if I go from say, 4th at 90mph, To 2nd. Still at 80ish mph. Let clutch out and it rings round to almost red line and the back wheel skips about.

However, Its a form of "backing it in", a cornering maneuver. And over time, Rear wheel lock up just feels "right". And looks impressive to other bikers. Laughing
Only mid corner though.

Similar to drifting a car. Thumbs Up

Stop talking out of your arse.

Block changing is fine, and if you do your CBT on an AUTO you are not entitled to ride a geared bike.

It sounds like you are changing down to many gears, but change down so much bliping the thethrottle will help match your engine speed to what it will be in the new gear.

It's not anymore as most test centres will not have a geared 50cc. They are just too expensive to be chucked down the road.

Ah right, I stand corrected.

Going back to 2004 when I did my CBT though.

So how come I did my test on geared 125 and had to show them my CBT which I did on a TAG?

Shouldn't have they then said, sorry but your can't do the test till you have done a CBT on a geared bike?

I may will be wrong about block gear changing, I was sure I had read it in RIDE that it wasn't the best thing to do as it more likely to cause lock ups and makes the ride less smooth.
