Well, I just typed a full Blindspot style thread out and gave up as I couldn't put my thoughts and experiences down properly Embarassed

Basically just post any helpful tips or snippets and positive criticism and even legal stuff about filtering as there's so much so many people don't know/aren't aware of and it would be nice to get this info in one place. This isn't a half assed attempt but I really don't know much myself and I'm pretty sure everyone would learn something.

On that note, I often look at car wheels because if they're turning anytime soon in traffic they need to move the front wheels, the vehicle will rarely move without the wheels turning so if you see this, you can expect it and will be able to figure out which way it's going to start going,

Anyone else? Cool
Or this could be a crap idea and fail badly. lol.

Whatever happened to planning ahead, correct speed and adequate observations?

Observe plan, and keep your fingers on the brakes,

ride in a low gear,

watch for an escape route, always have one

use cars as shields this is NOT infallible as in Radcliffe a side junction crash nearly got me (guy came out of a side road to turn right) but it was grid lock on his side of the road, he still came out and one car pushed another car 1/4 into my lane.

Buffer your brakes, ie if you sense danger tap your brakes to give an initial light bite, then you can brake incredibly hard without locking up.

be wary of high vehicles, as people may cross the road between them.

stand on your pegs if needs be.

Only filter if there is real benefit, as there is no point in benefits of less than 10 seconds or a junction, thus filtering at Bury junction saves me 4 minutes due to the jam packed cross roads and wimpy drivers.Conversely doing the same the other way saves me 4 minutes,But in Spring lane the first filter bit saves me 3 minutes, the 2nd filter bit quite a bit more dangerous saves me 2 minutes, the last filter bit saves me 1 traffic light sequence.

I don't bother the other way as it only saves me 20 seconds.

Relax while riding over white lines if you have to,

Defend your tyres and don't go on the V zones near traffic islands.

If you aren't ready for it don't competitively filter CBR girl wasn't ready and came off chasing me once.

Watch for unusual gaps often it is to let in cars from side junctions , tap brakes and have a look 2 seconds wasted doing this is better than a day in hospital.

Indicators on may help people to see you,

if the opposite lane is clear filter way far out , helps you to be seen and gives you an escape route.

if needs be escape onto the pavement, better to look a fool or ding your wheel than be crushed like a bug.

Scan around don't fixate bewary of what is around you,

Learn your route and be prepared for what is likely to happen thus bus lane coming up? , people will want to be in the right lane, thus position yourself accordingly either on the edge of the bus lane or on the middle section.

Don't be bullied into filtering by other riders , it happens.......

Feet down if you need to , it might not be considered proppa filtering by some people but better than toppling or losing your balance.

Momentomori - remember that you are mortal , only certain angry London couriers are immortal.

Hold back if possible.
Try make eye contact with the person.
Make it evident your there either by making alot of noise, or quick flash of lights.

Really good advice there, but this one for me is often the most important. Thumbs Up

I commute every day to uni and you do learn what traffic does on various points of the route. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen poor/ dangerous filtering [especially at this time of the year when lots of bikes come out of hibernation] when I wouldn't even consider filtering...

Just think to yoursef 'Everyone is trying to kill me'

Then you'll pap yourself and never leave the house, ergo, no accidents while filtering.

Or you'll think it while filtering, and won't get squashed, becuase you were looking hard enough!

I think Itchy just killed this thread with that post lol....

Responsive (and preferably loud) gear.

I ride like it anyway but thumb and index finger around throttle grip last 3 fingers always covering the front brake,

Watch for the wheels pointed inwards,

If cars slow down for no reason give them a wide berth and expect them to turn/change lanes.

Ultra carefull filtering passed turnings

Grip the tank with your legs,

I used to filter like a daemon and still do occasionally but in general im slowing down alot in stationary or very slow moving traffic.

Move over if theres a courier or faster bike behind you, that way you are not stressed trying to go fast and they can get where they are going without being held up.

Minor direction adjustments, big exaggerated swerves arent needed and unsettle you if something unexpected happens (which it will)

As you approach the front of a queue (traffic lights) Look to see if the crossing lane has stopped, ie your lights are about to go green, Its nice to time it perfect but best to wait a couple of cars back, make eye contact with a driver and pop into a gap, If theres not time, force yourself in agressively then give a hand of thanks to diffuse the situation.

Oh and if you filter to the front, dont hang around, get off the line quick...

I always look at the wheels, never the driver....

Someone can be looking straight at you and not see you, but you think you have eye contact..... Thats a joke, you cannot make eye contact in a helmet doing legal speeds with someone sat at a junction..... What 50 odd yds away.
Eye contact is always made close up.

Watch the wheels if the start to move then you know that they ain't seen you......

Filtering, watch for gaps anything might pop out of, super slow passed anything you can't see through...
As others always cover brakes.
And remember while you may be in the right, you are the one its going to hurt... Sick

True, but worth revisiting every couple of years!! Especially with drivers now fiddling with sat navs, which on top of mobiles makes filtering that more challenging - I always filter with my high beam on - when between lanes not when there is oncoming traffic - people tend to see me better and move to the side - this is always acknowledged with a nod or a wave - be courteous when filtering - if people block you then - stay calm & cool - you'll get past eventually. Be mindful around junctions - be careful around peeps with iPods - expect the unexpected - it will happen!!

Observation is vital in all aspects of riding a motorbike but you can't underestimate it's use while filtering.

Only yesterday I was saved a potential incident. I was riding through the centre of Manchester and filtering alongside cars on a single lane one way road. About 4 cars in front of me I spotted a girl leave Pizza hut and head straight for the road. She then disappeared behind the queuing traffic. I obviously knew that any second she was going to emerge in front of me. Obviously she didn't look as she was crossing a single lane road and she'd walked past the traffic and now only had to step onto the curb. If I'd not slowed down I'd have probably run straight into her.

She didn't even see me despite me being about 2m from her as she crossed my path, a quick beep of my horn (just to make a point) made her jump and she almost dropped the pizza she was carrying.

Most accidents start happening before you arrive on the scene. Doh!

Takes one to know one love.

Wink Mr. Green

On a serious note, Push bikes are ones to watch, you can't see/guess what they're gonna do and they get away quicker should you get 'involved' in an incident with them. Sure I once posted a thread about an incident with a cyclist on my commute home last year. Fuckin hurt my leg that did. Laughing

I did that once, the guy turned round and put a booted my headlight , my dad did this also a few years in his car, when somebody walked out without looking , honked the horn and the guy kicked his front bumper in.
