Hi guys

Right, last Monday i bought an aprilia rs125 gp-1 2004 from my local dealer and iv warmed it up every single day and have finally had time to get out on it today, so..

i warmed it up to around 60', set off slowly, went down a steep hill keeping in a high gear, came to the bottom of the hill and started driving up another steep hill, it started bogging down abit so i changed down a gear and was on my way up the hill when the bike cut out, cut in, then died. i pulled over and tried numerous times to start it again on the electric start and no luck, on about the 3rd attempt it backfired. I let it sit for about 3 mins then pushed it down the hill and tried to bump it and it seemed to be compressing properly but it just wouldn't start at all.

So, pushed it home, took the spark plug out and it was wet so i dried it off, checked for spark (strong spark) put it back in and tried to start it but after numerous attempts it would not start and now has a flat battery.

I though it could have blown a hole in the piston but it does sound to be compressing and there is no blowing when trying to start it, and it only backfired the once.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with it?? it had an engine rebuild around 320 miles ago and has always started up fine. Its not the end of the world as i have another bike to get around and the RS is still covered under the used bikes warranty but its so damn annoying!

And yes i have checked the fuel is switched on etc! lol

Thanks, Jon

It almost sounds like the choke was left on, assume its not auto ?
- if so maybe faulty.

Why are you so fussed about warming it up?
Just get on, start it and ride off seconds later.

Also, there's no point starting it daily if you aren't going out; the first minutes after a cold start are when 90% of engine wear occurs - so you're just wearing your engine out about 10 times quicker.

Its a two stroke, try a new plug.

Did you just let it sit there and get up to temperature? bad idea on a two stroke as it just oils up the plug. Start the bike and ride it, when it is up to temperature nail the fucker Smile

My rs 125 hasn't skipped a beat until now.
But that's cause I ran out of oil and overtightened my chain.
Money spent so far:
Tool box - 50 euros
Paddock stand - 30 euros
Cylinder + Gasket Kit + Bobbins + Transport - 300 euros
In total SO FAR before dismantling the bottom end I've already spent basically 400 euros, which is abuot 320 quid at the moment...
This week I'll see what's broken in the transmission.

Have you checked the fuel is getting through ok. Not trapped or kinked breather hoses/fuel lines?

Give it a few kicks over then check to see if the plug's wet, the best way to check is to get the tank off then put it back together though.

If youve got warrenty,
get it fixed under that.

Check whether its parts and labour or just labour.
if its both it should cost you nothing.

aaa, ok, I thought the older RS125's had both an electric start and a kicker. Not sure about the bump start thing I'm afraid.

Dont full throttle bump start thats asking for trouble lmao!
unless u like basically either razzing 1st and redlining or throwing your bike to the floor.

bump start ye but dont need full throttle as surely fuel would still be working with the pilot jet as well ad the main (throttle)

Well theres the check list for igniton.

Fuel
Air
Spark
Compression

Easy enough to check if your getting most of them id say,
but by all means try bumping it, my 50 bumps as long as the ignition is in the on position. For some reason it sounds to me like a blocked fuel line, either from crap that got sucked when you tilted the tank up like that or just residual petrol shit.

grr still no luck, tried to bump it with throttle on and the plug was wet when i took it out, dried it with hair dryer and put it back in but still no luck, and the battery is completely flat now.

how extremely annoying! its going to be sent back to the dealer now and repaired under warranty so its probably going to be a month before i see it again Evil or Very Mad

IF theres fuel on the plug,
its either compression or plugs dead.
if its a stroker most likely plugs dead.

Cant remember how to test the plug spark colour but sumone will explain.

it was sparking before but now the batterys completely dead theres no spark at all.

I think it must be something to do with compression or fuel as it died as i was riding it.

oh and the plugs a dark brown colour which is normally spot on with bikes.

it was weird when i was riding it because when i went up the hill i was in too higher gear and it started to bog down and seemed like it misfired, so i changed down and it drove for 2-3 seconds then cut in, then out, then died completely and it was like the ignition had been turned off. so i pulled over and tired starting it then on the 3rd attempt the exhaust backfired so it must have still had a spark.

But as i say, the plug is getting wet , its got a spark (well, did untill i ran the battery flat), and SEEMS to have compression but i cant be 100% sure unless i take the cylinder head off which i really cant be arsed doing at 8:57 on a sunday =[
