Hi folks

just had a few questions on cleaning my bike as a biking noob ,i like keeping my bike clean and have been cleanig it regularly,and i enjoy doing so

whats the best way to maintain the break discs ? they are clean, but there are tiny bits of whatever it is on them that doesnt come off with a normal clean and scrub,and slight bits on the edge , i just wondered what i can use on them to get that off and make it proper shiney ? can i use a scouring brillo type pad or anything ? and is it safe to use chrome cleaner on them aswell ?

also, whats the best way of keeping the wheel spindle thing clean ? as its hard to get the hands in there, is there any easy way ?

and are there sprays that can be sprayed on,then wash off easy making it nice n clean ? like removing the grease from spokes etc ?

also whats the main places i should be using wd40 on and keep lubed up ? any places i should be spraying after ive gave the bike a good clean ?

and also any general cleaning tips and any useful items and products are most welcome !

thanks folks Very Happy

I wouldn't bother cleaning your brake discs, it's the only part of the bike I leave.

Mr Sheen will dissolve all shit caked on wheels, chain muck, etc, if you can't justify spending a lot of money on degreasers.

I've just bought some SDOC 100, I'm not sure if it's any good, so interchange SDOC with Paraffin/Kerosene Razz

1) - Wash fairings all over with Autoglym Shampoo, also, low dirt parts such as seat, fork legs, yoke, clocks

2) - Spray fork bottoms, wheels, discs, calipers, gear change/brake levers, back wheel/hub with Autoglym MC Cleaner, agitate with brush, rinse off

3) - Pay attention to built up crud, brush Paraffin/SDOC onto really dirty bits, rinse and repeat until ALL grease has gone

4) - Using a clean cloth, wash degreased parts with Autoglym Shampoo

5) - Hose entire bike down, dry clean fairings with chamois

6) - Apply Autoglym Super Resin Polish to fairings, tank, etc

7) - Leave until dry

8) - Buff off with a clean cotton cloth

9) - Apply Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection

10) - Leave for recommended time, then buff off

11) - Back to black on chain guard, hugger, screen, cockpit

12) - Autoglym Fast Glass on clocks, mirrors, screen, headlight glass.

Depending on the condition of your bike, you might want to attack certain areas where dirt can build up such as:

* Front sprocket cover
* Behind chain guard/foot pegs
* Undertray

What a fanny on.

Cleaning should be:

Bucket of stardrops solution to wash off salt and road filth

Rinse and sun or towel dry

Mr Sheen on plastics/tank

Occasional autosol on end can

Clean brake discs by bloody braking!!!

Step one Spray bike all over with cheap degreaser.

Step two Pressure wash bike all over (except air intake)

Step three Wait for it to dry, then use farcela and some stockinette

Step four Relube chain, then go get it dirty again.

from the Book of Wrong

A guy I know through other people stripped his bike down a few winters ago now. He cleaned and reconditioned every piece before rebuilding it.

His wonderful, supportive Misses not only put up with piles of bike everywhere but even helped out so that come spring he had the bike back together and ready for it's maiden voyage.

Being the first time he had the bike back together he was decided to see what it could do and it was only then that he discovered when his Misses was being helpful she'd polished his brake discs.

True story, I heard it from a man in a pub.
