You leave a bike out in the rain for a few years?? Is there any electrical stuff that dies?? My SR250, basic 4t single, is now back on the road again but is totally lacking the power it has, it is rideable but totally gutless. Any ideas where to look for the problem??

Cheers, Rich

I'd wouldnt have thought the inside of the engine or carbs would be a pretty sight.

I have no idea if this is a good idea, but a guy at work told me he got a non runner working by getting 20l of oil, and 5l of diesel, mixing them and pouring it into the engine as much as it could take and leaving it overnight. He also poured parafin straight into the carbs and the fuel tank.

Two days later he drained the oil and saw how much muck there was in it, and when he put new quality oil in it, and a fresh tank of fuel it fired easily enough, he just took it for a ride and 'ran out' any crap in the internals, changed the oil again 5 tanks later and it's still running sweet.

Draining the engine oil and then filling it up with diesel will get any moisture out when you then drain the diesel. Diesel floats on water, therefore any water will be right down into the sump. If you know the insides of the engine has moisture in it then you'd be best to flush it with diesel a couple of times and then again with cheap oil before refilling it with whatever oil you use. If doing all that lot then it's also worth taking the spark plug out, putting a teaspoon of engine oil down there and leaving it to sit overnight.

Paraffin in carbs and fuel tank is the same thing, to get any moisture out.

Electrical stuff that dies; well yes, any electrics can end up corroding over time so I'd suggest looking the wiring over to check for any problems. WD40 on connectors, and anywhere else that looks like it could be in need.

Air filter could have taken a pounding, especially if it's a paper one. Carb jets sometimes go "furry" so I'd give that a strip and clean too.

cheers guys ill try out the diesel trick. Ive already had the carb apart and cleaned as its taken a lot of pissing around and fiddling with to get the bike rideable, massive flat spots and dying at top end revs.... I assume a nice bit of red will bo ok for flushing the engine with???
