I know the 1998 R1 will kill anything in its way and causes womens clothes to fall off at a touch of the ignition. It wheelies of the power at 300mph and is genuinely Gods motorcycling dream.

However, the prices for 200/2001 R1's are very similar to that of the 02/03 R1's.

I prefer the looks of the 02/03 R1's however and obviously if evolution has worked correctly its should be a better bike.

Now are the 02/03 R1's much of a difference besides looks? MPG similar?

Anyone whom has ridden/owned both any help appreciated.

Looks into old copy of TWO in the R1 edition, 00-01 was still carbed, just a refined version of the 98-99. The 02-03 was voted one of the most 20 best looking bikes in a bike survey (Bike - had a panel of engineers and designers vote) - the lines are smooth, linear yet set the bike off - certainly looks timeless. If i remember correctly, it was the first bike to feature an LED rear light along with the R6 of that era too.

Glad to see ur getting back into the bikes sammy.

Me old man has the 02 R1 on a 52 plate.

Seems very light.

Thing is a fella who is almost a friend has an 01 R1 up for sale at £3200 negotiable with 13k miles on.

Dont want to spend more than £3500 if I can help it. Seems looking on ebay though there are a few people desperado to sell there 02/03 R1's due to being posted abroad.

Yeah titz, I have lived the sheltered life far too long! Plus my car caught fire and melted 1 week ago! lol.

i've an 01 R1, been a fantastic bike, done a huge mileage (86000 wiv minimal problems bein a everyday bike as well), reliable, comfy, avent ridden 02/03 model but yr probably better off goin for the newer model due to the fuel injection.

I have the 02/03 R1.. it certainly is the first Fuel Injected model.

I love it... like someone said, its very light for a 1000. The looks have always been highly rated. Alot of people think the tail on the 02/03 is the best tail on any bike ever.. I tend to agree.
heres a couple of piccies of mine

The 02/03 model has one of the sexiest tails ever seen.

The 00-01 R1(5JJ model) & 02-03 R1 (5PW model) are very different in terms of feedback in handling and throttle response.
The 00-01 R1 has a very aggressive feel when you open up the throttle making it appear faster than the 02-03 R1 which is just an illuison!
The front end on the 00-01 R1 is very light making it feel unstable above 130mph and when you get near 150mph the shaking is scary due to the front being very light, this is all cured if you have a steering damper fitted.
whereas the 02-03 R1 does not feel as unstable at speed as bad as the 00-01 R1.
The fuel injection on the 02-03 R1 is nice and smooth and because of this smoothness it appears tame(slower) compared to the 00-01 R1 which is just an illiusion!
Handling wise i feel that the 02-03 R1 handles much better than the 00-01 R1 but even more so the 04 R1 (5VY model) handles even better!

The both models of R1 have a lot of grunt lower down in the rev range which is what i wanted but they have even more as you near the red line and when i say even more its like the bike has nitros in it in the lower rev range but top end and mid range feel like he bike is being fueled on higly unstable isotopes of plutonium!

I would recommend the 02-03 R1 over the 00-01 R1 but if you have the funds in the budget to stretch to an 04 R1 id say go for it, but make sure the recall work has been done on it to change the TPs sensor on the 04 & 05 R1!

Personally im not a fan of the body shape of the 02-03 R1 i prefer the 00-01 R1 shape and the 04 R1 onwards shapes even more but the 04 R1 and onwards all have a delay when you open the throttle, my mate has just bought an 07 R1 and its has that horrible delay, and the only way to remove this is to get a 15 tooth front sprocket wheras the 00-01 & 02-03 R1s dont have this issue

Ive owned the 00-01, 02-03, and currently own a 04 R1 my experience is from only riding on public roads with mates misbehaving ourselves so how these bikes perform on a race track i have no idea.

However the GSXR1000 range murder the R1 in all respective years, i felt that the GSXR1000 when compared to the R1s of the same year handled better and felt faster only reason i dont have a GSXR1000 is cos they got ugly after the K2 GSXR1000 they all now look like some sort of CYCLOPS with that ugly single head lamp at the front!

The GSXR1000 K2 is nice but a bit too bulky for me being that im only 5'4

Get the 02-03 R1 you wont be disapointed im currently selling mine in bike trader its all black its in there for £3700 but if i was shown £3500 in my face i well would not be able to say no!
