The Vision:
On the 4th April 2008 I passed my motorcycle test, and with the prospect of not having a bike to ride I set about to locate something a bit different to every other 17 year old. A goose. A 500cc 33bhp restricted fighter of a goose, with upside down forks, a raised rear end, a Suzuki 650 rear shock and a swing arm from a VFR NC30, just to list a few of the modifications.
But start small I thought, perform the less obvious upgrades first. And so a host of interesting details were planned over night.

The Bike:
I didn’t have a lot of cash, and still don’t, but with help from a fellow Northerner with a kind heart and a bike taking up more space than it deserves, I paid a deposit on the 5th for a Suzuki GS500E with 64,000 miles and some pretty ugly parts, the total fee was £285, including delivery.

The Project:
The bike was a state, it had been lovingly stowed away under a heavy sheet but due to the brutal northern weather something had to give. The sheet split and the elements took hold of this once mighty warrior of a bike. The ‘goose’ found an all time low of rust through exposure (through no fault of the owner!).

The Rear Disc:

Behind the Frame:

The Rear End:

Her Majesty:

The Beginning:
The beginning is yet to ‘begin’, with the Reiverclan Ebay account working day and night in a week long battle to raise £215 with just a couple of weeks. But the money is coming in, and sales are slowly taking place, several ‘high value’ items to run the auction and hopefully the income to finance the new lady of the shed.

So be afraid, be very afraid, because this goose WILL lay those golden eggs.

I thought a goose was a single cylinder 350cc bike?

Never heard a GS500E called that before...

Just a wee update on the G'sooey project Mr. Green

It's getting delivered tomorrow, all 500cc's (well a few less) of 1989 commuter power. Im buying a new rear disc and chain ASAP and then the project begins really!

Photos will come once the bike arrives!

P.s the NSR is still to finish, im swapping the jets around in the hope that will allow the bike to idle properly and then im reattatching the fairing sas good as i can and selling it in a half painted state.

I'd definately get a new chain, but I'd be tempted to see how well that disc scrubs up. Take it off and SOAK it in wd40 and keep applying, take a copper brush or similar to it.

Before you put it back on the bike clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner.

Then ride for a while with your rear brake pedal down and see if the rust comes off.

Worth a try!

now you see i was tempted to see how the chain scrubs up as the disc supposidly has some bad bits in it.

GS500e 1989 Project

To Fix:
• Chain
• Sprockets
• Slight Oil Leak
• Brakes
• Tachometer Cable
• Clutch
• Fork Seals
• Centre Stand
• Side Stand

To Buy:
• Chain and Sprocket Set - £75.00
• Rear Disc - £60.00
• PTFE Tape - £2.00
• Brake Pads - £35.00
• Brake Seals - £30.00
• Possibly new clutch cover spring
• Fork seals - £10.00
• Grease - £5.00
• Copper Grease - £5.00
• Brake Fluid - £5.00
• Brake Bleed Bits - £10.00
• Nuts and Bolts for rear sprocket - £5.00
• Thread Lock - £5.00
• WD40 - £5.00
• Semi-Synthetic Motor Oil - £15.00
• Full Tank of Fuel - £20.00
• MOT - £50?
• Insurance - £240
• Tax - £50?

Total expected price to make it road legal: £637.00
Excluding insurance: £290.00

The Questions:

1. Do I need a chain breaking tool/riveter to attach a chain to the bike, I expect so?
2. Do forks have both a dust and oil seal?
3. How do I figure out the correct bolt size if I’m replacing bolts from a sprocket?
4. Anyone have any idea how much an MOT is at M&S in Durham?

The Theory:

Well now that my new bike is here, and I’ve assessed the situation, and checked it’s response (Anyone see what course I’ve just completed?) I’m going to treat it and make it more comfortable.

Well that price list isn’t too bad, and that’s assuming I can’t get things cheaper than what I’ve estimated up thar!

First port of call is my funding, and as you may have noticed by now my money management skills are OK and I can soon raise funds from what appears to be nothing.

Now, this is personal information, but I trust you guys…. My bank balance stands at £8.40 and my current income is £30.00 a week (Term Time Only).

Well can anyone see a difficulty yet? Yep! No money! No wage, no buying stuff!

But I have yet another cunning plan.

This week I did a full week at college, which means I will be getting £30.00 to spend and next week if I can be bothered to go I will ‘earn’ another £30.00 and finally one more week before study leave, yet another £30.00!

This leads me to having £90, not bad IMO. I also receive my termly EMA bonus of £100, however I won’t receive that for a little while yet, probably 4-5 weeks.

So I’m stuck with £100, not really enough to fund the necessary bits and pieces now is it!

Well, I own an asset, yes, just the one, a Honda NSR in poor condition, yet it happens to be on E-Bay trying to help its older (And somewhat larger) brother the GS500e.

It’s turned to prostitution and is now selling it’s body, ONLINE!

With a reserve of £350, and a starting bid of £100 let’s hope it can make enough money to bring the gs500 back to life… as I quite want to see what it’s got!

With my money troubles and the possibility the NSR may not sell I’m assigning a deadline of May 23rd. This date has no real significance, except it is the beginning of the weekend, and gives me plenty of time to locate the parts needed and sort everything out.

Oh and the restrictor kit is coming for free hopefully!

Aye im one of them northerners you hear about every now and again Very Happy

But aye the bikes coming along, admitantly i havent bought any parts yet due to fund lacking however i have managed to get some cleaning up done, the bike looked alot worse than it actually was to be fair.

i just need to get the rust off the downpipes and end can then i'll paint it and re-install the heat shield on the can but again that means costs... paint, rivot gun and rivets...

Dransy thanks, i think i've seen it before but lost the link it really is a good site!
