Went to the Brooklands open day last Sunday. What made my day - meeting one of the greatest racers of the 60's and 70's, Phil Read MBE - 8 times TT winner, 125, 250 and 500 GP champion - and all round nice guy

Phil Read rode the Patton (think it was a 4 Cylinder, 4 stroke Honda) on the hill climb event - once a racer, always a racer

Now an old man, but still has racers eyes. He told me he still races in Clubman and Veteran races. Said he had to buy some new leathers with sliders on them as it "seems to be the thing to do these days - get yer knee down". When I commented on the lack of wear on the slider he said "why wear them out when there's no need too"

Best Bit - Got Mr Read to sign my Crash Helmet, and NO it's not going on Ebay Smile

Some other photo's from the day

Nothing like the sound of a race bike from the 60's - you should have been there

Very loud 750 Honda - yes Mike Hailwoods

And a prize for those who can guess who got to ride it - wasn't me - Clue, his team mate was Barry Sheene. Also banned from Macau for blowing up a brothel and he also posed as a doctor to allow John Hopkins to fly from Japan to the Australian GP

If Mr Read ever needs a kidney or a bit of liver, he can have mine for either one of these beautiful bikes.
