How hard would it bee to change your own tyres and just pay for the balancing?

I got a new rear wheel for the GS but the tyre is buggered - my old wheel has a perfectly fien tyre - do I really have to pay for someone to swap them?

From the stories Keith has told me about trying to change a tire, i'd pay some one the fiver to do it.

Hi

I have changed tubed tyres. It is possible but not a pleasant job. Tubeless ones are far more difficult. It is possible if you have the correct tools, but not really worth buying them unless you will be doing loads of tyre changes.

All the best

Keith

You can buy bead breaking machines made by ABBA for about £100, but you're likely to damage your rims if you don't know what you're doing.

Just pay the shop the £10 and let them do it Smile

I change all my own ones and in a week I will be able to balance them as well. Very Happy

we now have,

1 front (the one which can lift under yokes as well)

One of those abba stands with 10 different sets of adaptors.

3 rear ones (normal, single sided and bobbins)

And lastly a proper bike ramp.

I personally don't think tyres are that difficult to change. Some are more difficult than others admittedly, but it isn't as difficult to what you're all making out. I change tyres almost on a daily basis, and the most difficult thing is protecting the rims, not actually getting the tyres off. And you don't need a bead breaker either, a vice is good enough, then a couple of rim protectors and a couple of tyre levers.

Tubeless tyres are the worst as the bead is often difficult to break, but if you have a vice in your garage, then this will often suffice, although putting the tyre back on can be very awkward and requires lots of soap.

Shame you didn't ask a week ago as have just sold a tyre changer for £50 with all the attachments.

Balancing a tyre can be done manually with a static balancer, but it can take for ever. However based on years of experience fitting and balancing bike tyres, the rear is not as important as the front, so you may get away with it OK.

On the other hand, I have a dynamic and static tyre balancer for sale (motorcycle specific) available for £300 (cost over £1K new) complete with all fitments and balance weights. Question
