i'll be starting in september and i know i should sell the R6 because living in a city center it will certainly be stolen/ pissed on/ pushed over by drunks, BUT i reaaaaallllllly dont want to!

i had thought of leaving it at home and coming back for rides, but it doesnt seem worth the insurance money for maybe a ride a fortnight if im lucky

how do you manage to keep your riding up?

Quite a few of us here at uni from what i understand,

I can afford to ride a bike because i dont piss my money away on drink, i guess if you want something enough you make it happen right?

Plus i dont know about your uni but at mine its worth it alone to pass the endless lines of Punto's and Corsa's waiting to get through the security barriers into the carpark, i just slip through and park up right outside my lecturers for free, The when thats all finished tear off into the sunset passed all the suckas waiting at the bus-stop Razz Cool

I'm in my second year.

I don't drink a hell of a lot, so I have money to piss away on bikes instead.

I've had a hornet, a mille and now just a hornet race bike since I've been at uni.

I live at home and commute to uni on the train, so I guess my out goings aren't as bad as some.

It's easy enough to go to uni and have a bike, you just need to sort your priorities and have some self control. Wink

What uni you going to?

I'm going back to Sheffield (hallam) for my final year but not gonna take the bike. There's nowhere for me to park it really and in sheff you don't need transport, just use the public services. Will certaintly miss it but wouldn't use it enough whilst at uni to warrant the effort of keeping it there.

I go to uni, but I live at home, in hindsight I would have liked halls, but there we go! So I ride to uni and back most days. Are you going to be living in halls? The uni I am at has cycle parking where they also allow motorbikes, they tend to stay pretty safe!

City Centre, Uni Lad, R6 all spells disaster and tears. Leave your bike sorn for a year and keep it under cover at your folk's?

I'm in Lufbra, they have bike sheds where we can stash our bikes, I've always lived in student houses which had a gated entrance so quite often, it was locked and out of sight and even around the back, i had a cover and chain and alarm on.

Lufbra's all right since drinks are always on offer and they're always plenty cheap. You can easily get slaughtered on a tenna if you were up for it.

Luckily for me, the rolling hills of leicestershire and nottinghamshire are at my doorstep - we've got a "circuit" here, which is a loop from loughborough -> 6 hills -> hathern -> coloerton -> shepshed -> loughborugh which is all sweepers and straights. If i've got an hour 2 free after lectures, i do that run. In the summer, it's really therepeautic. There's also a uni bike club, so we used to get a few lads together at the end of the day and go for a blast - 30 miles or something.

I also do a lot of Lufbra -> London runs on a monthly basis, so it's certainly much cheaper and practical than a car. Because Lufbra is a campus uni with everything self contained, and my bike is rather loud, i get noticed A LOT, which is a good thing if you're a bit of an attention whore.

I'm at uni, first year, and have a house with housemates who dont mind me filling the yard with bikes- we had 3 in here for a while. It's a bit tight for space and does involve a bit of heavy lifting if we have to put the 500 somewhere where we can work on it, but they are all in a locked yard and to be honest the lack of access just makes 'em harder to pinch.

Bike parking places at the halls here (Plymouth) are more- or- less non existent- but there's a multistorey car park which is locked at night and has free bike parking.

I'd say its definitely worth bringing the bike down if you can find somewhere safe to park it- do a recce first and see what's what.

As for paying for it, well I bought my 125 and did my CBT with money I saved through not pissing it all up the wall, and having a few drinks in my mates kitchen to socialise instead of going to some club with rip- off drinks prices and where you cant hear yourself think anyway...

really depends where your going, you might find you can park no problem, or no chance.

you could get yourself a cb500 or something and get something more shiney once your finished.

personally i'm 125in my way to uni and its FAR better, get there quicker and its almost free, i couldn't afford to go there if it was down to useing the buses, dispite the journey being 20minutes (15 with no traffic)

Just a thought Wink

im going to be at portsmouth, from what iv seen there are plently of those curved steel poles set into concrete to lock the bike to outside the halls, but its still in full view of the street

every thing is walking distance from my halls anyway, it would just be for weekend entertainment. i think titz's idea sounds best for me, im sure it would be safe in my garage at home, its a dead quiet estate.

cheers for the tips all

Aston uni in Brum (but not for much longer - finish in 4weeks. woohoo!!)

No bike at present mind. Only passed my DAS test last week and on the prowl for my first big bike... Will probably have a ride back when I get my bike after my finals. For a bit of motorway experience and see the place one last time (before graduation!)

Vishal, I'm at Aston too.. small world hehe. Although I'm on my placement year.

And your uni life must be different to mine if you cannot wait for it to finish! I'm coming to the end of this placement year and itching to get back to uni. I physically cannot wait for it!

Don't know what I'll do with my bike. Don't think I'll bring it, but rather sell it because I'll be living relatively centrally close to the city centre and to uni.
Although 9 months of having no rideouts may force me into getting a cheap hack!

No way... small world indeed!

Well I guess me being a bit of an "oldun" think differently...(i'm 27 you see. If that is old? Lol.) Plus I have a good job lined up starting in July, so itching to get out there and making some bucks (to buy a beast of a bike ofcourse!)

Yeah - Aston is the kinda place that is trouble free. All you need is a pair of legs and a bita cash. Everything is well within walking distance so no need for a bike or car. Living on campus myself (I'm in the Dalton TV lounge as I type!! Lol.)

I'm at Exeter uni in my 2nd year. I'd say take your bike to uni, it's fairly unlikely that you won't be able to find a place to park it. If you can't stand the idea of leaving your R6 outside then as suggested think about getting an old shitter.

My halls last year even had a dedicated motorcycle shed! Mr. Green. This year I've got a house with a nice big paved back garden and a shed. I had 4 bikes in the garden at one time.
