 |
|
What strategy do you use when going abroad regarding cash?
Do you take all the cash your going to need in Euros, or draw it out from an ATM whilst abroad?
The reason I ask is that I've read a few posts on here that suggest French ATMs can be a bit tempremental with UK cards, and I can be a bit of a dozy cnut sometimes (I.e leaving wallets on top of petrol pumps etc, in fact on a hol in Gran Canaria a couple of years ago I managed to jump in the pool with 1000 Euros in my pocket!! ).
I think I'd rather take it in cash though. Any suggestions/thoughts/experiences of French/Spanish ATMS?

ATM including the handling fee gives better exchange rates, though last time I went I kept £100 in cash in an emergency pocket and took 300 Euro split in 3 pockets, and used credit card and cards when I needed more.
The £100 saved me when my cards stopped working South o France ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll take 500 Euros and a couple of cards and use them wherever possible. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Can't do any harm to let your credit card company/bank know you're off on holiday.
I've heard of them blocking a card if they suddenly find large withdrawals happening in foreign countries. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Great! You can guess who I bank with!! In fact, Barclays usually block the card if I use it more than 5 times in one day in the UK. I'll be taking a Mastercard now for peace of mind methinks. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Just a note to those traveling in doggy country's its worth carrying a fake wallet with expired/canceled cards and a few small euro notes in it just in case you get mugged as you can hand it over instead of your real one and it prevents corrupt police from seeing how much cash you have on you when you pay a fine/bribe. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

Good thinking Batman!!
I'm only going France/Spain this year, but I will hopefully doing some Eastern Bloc countries next year and I think I shall do that. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
