 Posted: 23:09 - 30 Apr 2008 Post subject: I'm after a McJob. |
 |
|
So my last exam is in about three weeks, leaving me with 4 months of free time and no money, I was planning on hitting the ground running in regards to sorting something out and was planning on phoning round places next weekish, asking if they're after CVs so I can get some interviews as soon as I'm back.
After setting my expectations a bit low a couple years back, I've realised just how easy it is to walk into min wage type work, and ended up with probably the worst job, 'crew member' at McDonalds (yes, thats the official job title) I have my old job still open to me anytime I want which is a nice safety net.
First thing I'll do when I get back is walk into Hein Gericke and ask if they're hiring, cos that'd be ideal. But other than that what chain stores are the best to look at, When I was first looking for a job I assumed all the shelf stacking, till monkey stuff was all min wage, but I know some places pay a bit more, which adds up, I also know mates who found getting days off a lot easier, or harder than me, and stuff like that tends to be done according to policy, so your experiences may apply to my local branch.
I'm not limited to high street chains/supermarkets mind, in fact I would love to do something more interesting, just since I'm only doing it for four months any kind of real job probably wont be interested in me.

Try a temp agency, look in the newspapers for stuff like temp office worker, temp admin, etc, they pay better than shelf stacking jobs, if that fails, than just go around the supermarkets, asking for vacancies, i did this when I left college, and most of the time, they just give you an application form.
DONT become a full time barman, whatever you do , but a pub job is very good as a second job

Bit late? I wont be availible to work/sit interviews for 3-4 weeks.
Ta for the temp agency tip, hadn't thought of that, supose theyre after experience rather than qualifications, though I have neither really I'm pretty good in interviews though, worth a shot anyway.
Lass was telling me on MSN that her friend who works weekends at waitrose just got a 1000 quid bonus , seems a bit bollocks to me, but apparently they pay a fair bit over min wage, one for the shortlist I think. |

Yeah try a temp agency and get a cushy office job. Sit drinking coffee all day while surfing the web, working out which tasty bird you're going to try and pull next |

When you're on the HG website, look for the "About Us" or the "jobs" links.
Surprising what you find when you look beyond what you are looking at.
I was on the Royal College of Arts website the other day, looking up an exhibition, and I clicked on their jobs section, found an interesting admin one that I might just apply for ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

I'm a Morrison'er
Hate it, Have been put forward to become supervisor but don't want it, because of the extra responsibility and the no extra money. Long hours I get 4.84 which is alright since min wage for 17 is 3.30 (i think anyway).
Bonus usually is only when you've worked there for a certain time, ours is 1 year. Its not worth it.
God I need to find a apprentiship. ____________________ www.southwestbikers.com

Cheers, thats exactly the sort of thing I was after, food delivery sounds like it could be a laugh as well, wonder if they'd let me use the CB that would be considerably more fun than a clapped out c50.
Tried HGs site hellkat, but I couldnt see a jobs link, I'll just pop in as soon as I get back, I'm pretty sure they wont have anything going tbh, good luck with the RCA thing |

I work in the warehouse at Currys (oh joy), I just handed a CV into the manager one day then they rang me a week later asking if I was still looking for a job. £5.52 an hour but if the store does well and hits/goes through targets you get some nice bonuses. The manager at my branch is a "live for my job" type though which means he expects everyone else to be the same and thinks it's fine to change the rota as and when he feels regardless of if you've got plans or not. I think working in big shops like Currys or Comet depends on what kind of people the managers are, if they're laid back then great but if not you can get a lot of hassle trying to get time off or swapping shifts for doctors appointments etc.
The supervisors/managers at my place are plebs though, they have no trouble messing everyone around and generally being idiots to everyone and seem to enjoy flexing what tiny amounts of power they have over people. I'm sort of half looking for something else but I know untill i get myself sorted with a driving licence then I'll be hopping from one crappy job to the next.
If you can drive then there's loads of other options open to you, well, there are where I live anyway (North Wales). ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N
