Nearly added to the BCF spill counter today - but thankfully not.

I went out for a quick spin around lunchtime. I was going through a little village, close to where I live and was in a 30 zone, when a car coming the other way suddenly veered right (his right), straight across to my side of the road and and caused me to run right onto the grass bank in order to avoid him.

I think the driver must have nodded off or just totally zoned out as at the last second he bolted upright in his seat and looked petrified.

Thankfully I was only going around 30ish (i try not to break the red limits) as it would have been a head on if I had been going any faster.

It really shook me up!!

I get an incident like that atleast once a day tbh.My defensive riding style is verging on the edge of paranoia as a result.
I slow at every side road, leave double distance between me and the cars ahead, and treat every cage driver as someone who wants to kill me.It`s a shite way to look at things....but it`s working so far.
When something happens to the front or side of me i`m always ready for it.

Either there's something wrong with drivers in your area or a huge problem with your riding Shocked

How can my riding be a problem?...did you read what i said about my riding style?

I spend a lot of time dealing with early morning and early evening cage commuters.....THAT`S the problem.
In the mornings they`re all half asleep or hungover....and in the evening everyone`s pissed off after their work day and eager to get home.
Seriously...in the evening rush hour people drive like nutters round here.Give way signs, road markings, and junctions, mean nothing to them...they just roll straight through and fuck any bike that gets in the way.
Shit happens......

Fair does. Just find it hard to believe that that sort of thing happens so often.

well i can`t speak for every rider but i`m sure "most" lads see atleast one thing everyday that could`ve gone bad if they didn`t have their wits about them.
Suppose it depends where you live though...and how much time you spend on the roads.

I used to spend most of my time awake on the roads until my accident. Commutes in busy town traffic and hoons in the weekend/night time.

Maybe had a few close calls every now and again but nothing as often as that.

Same here - I do around 500 miles per week, sometimes more, often in rush hour and often heading in or out of london. I don't get may incidents, certainly nothing as close as the one today.

I often have situations where if i wasnt paying attension it could of turned nasty. and hurt me,

But who would be prepared to ride a bike if they know they cant pay attension to whats happening around them.

A example of this is, i was following a bus this afternoon and even whe i went out wide i couldnt keep out of his blindspot, and he was braking hard then going really slow, was un-nerving, but i gave him more space and slowed and im still alive.

Perhaps you are giving the other road user the idea you are letting them out by slowing down, or that the gap is big enough for them to get into.

If its happening on a daily basis then i would think about your riding position on the road and spacing.

I find now at day time no lights on helps drivers judge distances better, you see some with blinding lights on and trying to judge a distance is very hard and may prompt them to move when its not safe. Just put my dipped lights on when filtering past lines of very slow or static traffic.

I'm very aware of any car at a junction, and the fact they may pull out. But you have to be aware that your action can tempt them into moving.
You are right to think they are all out to kill you, as it keeps you alive.

A professional bullshitter has encounters like the OP every day. The rest of us mere mortals manage to get by on just the occasional one.

Fair point i didn`t think of it like that.
I don`t think `im totally to blame though......on some occasions i`ve actually been glad i was hanging well back and double checking the side roads. (like when numpties just come rolling straight out after only taking a quick glance and not even pulling up first . Rolling Eyes )
