I have decided i want to join the police when i finish my degree.

I am currently applying to become a special constable with grampian police which i think will be a lot of fun.

Does anybody have any advice about what will help me get in routes they have taken after the initial 2 years.

Cool

I don't think they bother about stuff like that, surely that's your own business?

If you've got criminal convictions it may be another story though.

First thing that came into my head was the whole amount of drugs problems I thought you had, haven't you been diagnosed with various mental issues or is my memory that is failing me?

Actually mental health issues don't count if you've gone for a review and been told you're OK.

At least in the navy, anyway. My friend is joining the navy, she was diagnosed with Schitzophrenia at 14.

Well, the worst thing they can do is say 'No' (well they could get the sniffer dogs on you and find 3 ounces of crystal meth up your bum but I doubt they'd be in attendance at the interview).

Kudos to you for giving it a go - Good Luck with it Thumbs Up

They do loads of checks. I was suprised by how deep they go when my sisters boyfriend joined the force they managed to find that my dad had connections to the BNP and that's just for someone who isn't related to the applicant!

A few of my friends joined the force, my friend who joined the gtr mancs force had no problems really but my other friend with a degree, masters and phd (all top marks) was on the waiting list for 2 years to get on the yorkshire force!

I was reading somewhere, wikipedia I think that schizophrenia is self diagnosed rather than being told you have it, could be something to do with it. Thinking

As far as I know she was definitely diagnosed by a doctor.

FWIW Yorkshire had a policy of not promoting from outside itself. Not sure how that affected recruiting new applicants but a guy I know was very lucky to get transferred from the Met. up to Yorkshire. Policies change so may not be the case now, just posting to say Yorkshire has a history of being very picky.

On topic, if that's what you want then go for it. No point in a few years down the line saying you wish you had. After the first 2 years you can apply for traffic. However, as they seem to be despised by even other police officers maybe not the best career move. Remember, even after all the traffic training you still could end up driving a desk.

The doctor will say its that if you tell him the right things. (not saying she was lying)

Taken from wiki.....
Diagnosis is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and observed behavior. No laboratory test for schizophrenia currently exists.

This page,............. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia

I just meant that its one of those things, they cant say you HAVE it, they just think you have it according to that as no tests exist apparently.

I tried to join about 6 years ago... got all the way to the end and messed up at the assessment centre. About medical checks, there are quite a few pages of questions, which your GP needs to sign to verify it is correct. One of them goes along the lines that you have never abused drugs. If you have, or at the very least it's on your medical records (lets face it, most people have tried something at some point), you'd best tick yes and I think either there is a space for your doctor to add comments, or they will write to him/her for further info if they need it. They will almost certainly give you a piss test as part of your medical before you join.

Joining as a special will give you a good idea of what to expect and maybe get some tips from the inside! Also, make sure you are physically fit. When I went to join, it was surprising how many people had obviously not prepared for the physical aspect of the testing. Aim to be able to run 1 1/2 miles in under 11 minutes (unless the physical has changed since I tried to join). So many people just couldn't handle more than a few minutes of the famous bleep test! Do a bit of weight training, but anyone with arms wider than a pencil should be able to pass that.

I hope that helps!

Thats how just about all mental illness works gov. You describe your situation to the psych, they ask you questions, you get a diagnosis.

I have no idea, I just thought I would mention what I had read as it may have had some bearing on the reason.

Cheers for that though.

Be prepared to be kept waiting, even if they make allowances for your personal history. I persuaded an ex-colleague to apply 2 months after I did - she had her Day 1 assessment last month, and mine isn't until next week, so she's skipped ahead of me by 3 months despite the recruitment blurb swearing blind that they don't discriminate at this point in the procedure - the bit they admit comes later.

My Little Miss is in week 8 of her training, and absolutely loves it. No harm in applying, even if you don't take up their offer. At least you'll know whether they would've accepted you or not.

Going for the Specials is a pretty good plan - you don't get to do a lot of the stuff the regulars do - but you'll get a fair idea of what's going on.

Very Happy

There are better ways to make a living. Want to make a difference? Why not get to know the people in the community and help them out when you can? Seen a criminal activity? Phone the Police or make a citizens arrest. If it's the responsibility your after, why not join IAM and become very good and be an observer ( or something ).

For fucks sake, don't be a copper. You will go in with your eyes wide open, enthusiastic, bright, challenged. You will emerge a year later, tired, bitter, resentful, an empty shell, carrying out orders you neither believe in or care about. Going through the motions.

You really going to arrest a car full of teenangers for smoking weed in a car park?

Don't do it man. It's a weird job for weird people.

A colleague of mine was a hobby bobby, He spent a few evenings a week and some weekends for at least a couple of years. He used his holiday entitlement to go to court hearings in arrests/assaults he was involved in. He was even one up from your basic special, sort of team leader type thing.

He applied for "The Job" as he called it, and was told he wasn't suitable.

Makes you wonder what they were after.

So he got some stick from us for being OK for free but they weren't going to pay him to do it!

He lost interest after that and cut back his hours and eventually gave it up.

Now the Muppet is a retained fireman.

St. Johns ambulance next I suppose. Rolling Eyes

Ste - that PCSO pic is awesome - just MMS'ed it to Little Miss, and she's pissing herself (a slightly erotic idea, I must confess) and is looking forward to showing her ex-PCSO mates tomorrow.

To be fair to them, by all accounts most Plastics actually recognise that they're a bit cack.
