Here's the deal. Since my engine is fucked, and I'm spending loads on fixing it, when I sell it and repay my parents I'll have less money than I'd like to have, so I'll be getting something older.
I've been looking at ZXR 750s, and some of them have like 50000 miles but go for less than 2000 pounds which is really cheap in Spain.
How many miles as a maximum would you buy a bike like that with?

Here's an example:
zx6r 2001, 80000km (53000 miles)

Depends on how it has been serviced and looked after, such engines are designed to be revved at high rpm and thus suffer lots of stress, used less vigourously should last 100K easy.

BUT...

if they are serviced right ie valves oil changes cct changes cc change , cam lobes , piston rings etc...

I saw a 954 blade the other day done 94000 miles , but it had been rebuilt once at 77K , and looked after.

Thanks. Also what are SRAD 750s like? 1997,8,9...
Looked at the specs and somewhere around 130-140 bhp sounds very attractive, again, around 2000 pounds here.

i once owned a cx400 that had done over 150000km with out a rebuild Very Happy hehe, hardly a high stress engine though,
some of the old suzuki oil boilers will easily get well over 100000km with out any trouble at all and will still have loads of life in them

I've seen many of my ZX6R models knocking about at 40k miles. Mine did 27k miles with full servicing at the right intervals until sand got into the engine and siezed it up. With a ninja, IF it's had its valves checked, oil changed at 4k intervals and camchain tensioner replaced at 30k, then i doubt that they'd be anything wrong with a 40k+ miler bike, BUT that's totally dependent on service history. See if you can blag a test ride or at least ride pillion to have listen to how it sounds etc, although bikes of that kind of mileage i should suspect the chassis to be pretty tired, so do check that they have been refreshed - rebuilt forks/rear shock, cush drives, steering bearings etc. I can expect a ZX6R engine to go past 70k miles until it sees problems.

Well, when i got my bike sprayed, it spent about 6 weeks in the sprayer (because i left it over christmas/new years). It was probably left outside or in the sprayshop exposed with no bodywork. The dust settled which then rested on the air intakes.

It later transpired that my bike had a tear in the air filter!

What makes it even worse is the fact that i rode it along the east coast of scotland on my daily commute. I work by the coast, i live along the firth of forth, salty, misty air would have easily been sucked in. Anyway it was mostly sand that was in the airbox due to the tear, hence top end and barrels being ground and blasted.

i guess i should check my air filter, it could probably do with replacing. Cheaper than a new engine.

Yeah man, it's one hard learned lesson - not only did i technically write off my bike by breaking every single panel and wrecking the exhaust, BUT this thing was totally unrelated. I remember my mate saying - you need to clean and change your air filter! I didn't heed the warning and continued riding it in winter. Rolling Eyes 1000 for bodywork and exhaust + 700 for new engine, install, valve clearance + carb sync (basically a full service with the installation.

However my Friends 2003 ZX636 B1H reached 40k and is still going strong. 2003+ Kwaks are better.

A Ninja should easily go upto 80k before it need attention to the top end, cam chain and tensioner. They do sound a bit rough when they get older, they do last though.

My '01 J2 made it to about 21k before it was cheaper to swap the engine than to repair & service it. The chain and sprockets lasted longer. Razz

My GSXR600 is approaching 40000. Had a cam chain and tensioner change about 2000 miles ago. Mechanic reckons that the engine was spot on.

Oh really? Good thing I didn't know that little tidbit when I put 100,000+ miles on at least 6 Kaw's... 165,000 on my old GPz11..

Wave is jealous that kawasaki GT550 riders are running about the city of london doing courier runs which deprive wave of jobs to do Razz.

My mechanic when he MOT'd the bike said that it was a peachy engine 27k miles and strong as an ox, which mystified him why it was burning so much oil. Bike magazine did a test about 4 years ago when they ran a ZX6R F engine flat out on the redline for 30 mins, radiator gushing, exhaust on fire, coolant pissing everywhere. Had to extinguish it. They topped the engine up with fluids and ran it, it was just fine, so contrary to belief, ninja engines are relatively bomb-proof. It was a 37k miler bike if i remember correctly.

Kwak engines are let down by their casings so when u drop them, they break! I've got to say that i had cct changed and valves done at 26k for good measure and it was running without missing a beat until the sand got into the airbox, what with it being ram air and all caused a huge cock up in the valves etc.

Are there any other bikes in this price range with roughly the same power? I want at least 120 bhp, cause any less and I might as well get an old hornet or something

Any other bikes to consider?
I'm guessing the insurance on a tls or tlr would be brutal?
Same would go for a cbr 900 right?
