I has what i'd consider my first really close call. Scared the shit out of me!!

I was commuting to work, down a 40mph road at about 30mph due to a car in front. He indicated left to turn into the side road and didnt need to slow to take the corner as it was quite wide. I was about two car lengths behind continuing along the road when this woman decides she's got plenty of time to do a right turn out from the side road right in front of me!

I hit the brakes way to hard & locked up the front, released them again then when on the brakes hard again. She realised she shouldnt have moved out so just STOPPED in my lane!! i managed to stop the bike about 1 foot from her rear wing. she then waves sorry and just drives off.

I couldnt belive how heavy the bike seemed to get when the front wheel locked, and how much it hurts to slide into the fuel tank quickly!

Classic SMIDSY.
Car driver looks at the car turning and fails to see the bike behind it.

To compensate it's all about road position. When approaching a junction on the left always advisable to move out to the right to the middle of the road. Also when following a car don't focus on just what it's doing but keep an eye on what's in front of it.

If you follow any advanced rider you'll find they're always moving the bike to the left or right to either get the best road position and/or make sure they're seen.

After you've got a bit of experience riding on the road I'm recommend signing up for one of the BikeSafe or seeing about doing a ride with your local IAM branch. Even if you don't join and do the full exam it's surprising what you can pick up. If you're so inclined reading a copy of Motorcycle Roadcraft can help, just don't get too bogged down or hung-up in the terminology used.

HTH Thumbs Up

I considered doing the bikesafe, or even and IAM course a while back.. i really need to pull my finger out and sign up.

Unfortunatly the driver chose to leave their glasses at home this morning as i'd already moved the bike over to the far right (about a foot from the centre line).

I'm hoping to do the Bikesafe course this year as well, just need to sign up!
However I am a member of the IAM and would recommend joining, even if you don't join the IAM there is always ROSPA (if they would be more convenient)
It does make you think more about where you are, what you can see and what others can see (eg you)
If your not sure they do have assesment runs (which are free) so you can get a feel for what it is all about.

The worst ones are when they look at you and don't even appollogise, that when people start losing mirrors.

I had the most stupid one ever.

I'd gotten up really early and was riding all the way from the south to the north. Going through the Peak District and went round a corner and the car in front of me pulled out to overtake the car infront of it.
The whole other side of the road was empty and along with the car pulling out and overtaking in no real rush, for some reason I sub-consciously thought I was on a dual carriageway so pulled out myself.

Then suddenly I noticed a car coming right at me so I had to pull into my lane quickly, braking as well to avoid the car that was parallel to me. It really shook me up (for good reason too!) and I had horrific thoughts going over what would have happened if I didn't notice the car in time (It didn't register with me at first!) or if I'd gone round the corner on the wrong side.

What a stupid thing!

I once had a bus pull-out to overtake a bicycle, it came right across the road, straight into my path.

I missed by inches.

Fucking London buses, next time I'm gonna kill the driver.

not at all like what happed to me (although it has and ive hit the car0 but the bus story reminded me of when i was at uni many many many moons ago, i was heading to my then girlfriends house on my little 100cc a100, and a bus decided i wasnt going fast enough so it decide to pass me, cool, im fine with that,
but half way through passing me he completly forgot that he was passing, and started to drift back to the left forcing me to bunny hop up the curb (when i say forcing, i mean the bus was actually physically pushing me of the road)
needless to say i was pritty fucked off,
i rode along the foot path and got in front of him and shot back on to the road and stopped at the next set of lights and jumped of the bike,
and ran up to the bus door and started thumping it, needless to say he didnt let me in to knock his block off Very Happy
any way its not that people dont see us, even if they do, they soon put us out of there mind.

grrr

sorry about the story Thumbs Up
