Hi!

I currently own a K4 GSXR 600, and whilst I really love her, Ive had her for 3 years now & I really feel I want to be moving up in the world onto something bigger and (hopefully!) better.

I went out last weekend round the local bike shops just for a look around, no intention of buying anything, and I cast my eyes upon an Aprilia RSV 1000 R... and ever since I havent been able to stop thinking about it! I think I pretty much fell in love with it & it made me realise I am no longer truley happy with my Gixxer. Sad

I dont particularly want to dive in with both feet before trying to find out about the RSV R, so Ive been trying to do a bit of research on it, but Im finding pretty much mixed reviews. :s

I guess the reason for posting this is to see if anyone had made a simlar leap from a 600 sports such as my Gixxer, to an RSVR? I cant take the RSVR for a test ride as its against their policy to test ride second hand bikes, so I really am looking for re-assurance that it would be a worthwhile purchase & I would notice a considerable difference in power etc. I'm trying to steer away from the regular GSXR, R1, Ninja etc. and fancy something with a bit less of a 'hooligan' reputation (if that makes sense?), and think this seems a nice, sensible (ish!!) choice.

Anyone have any opinions? Here is a link to the exact bike I was looking at...

https://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/bikes/APRILIA+RSV/Ne-2-4-7-8-27-64-104-133-146,N-125-4294967148-4294967149/advert.action?R=200817308618583&distance=5&postcode=ne5+1ue&channel=BIKES&make=APRILIA&model=RSV&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

My Gixxer is up on Ebay at the moment and due to end Thursday night, so I'll be looking to purchase a new one asap (its my only form of transport), but dont want to make a mistake!

Cheers.

Steve.

funnily enough wave has recently moved to an rsvr

he has had more bikes than some folk have hot dinners tho, so its not exactly straight from 600 to rsvr

it must be a pretty good bike as he has gone through enough, so must know a thing or two about different bikes

he's not too keen on the service intervals but loves the bike

Thanks for your reply. Smile

That sounds re-assuring. Like I say I dont really want to just hop onto an R1 or anything & lose my license or kill myself, but I do fancy something with more oomph & this seems like a nice choice. I just wish I could have a test ride of it first. Sad As long as I will be able to notice a difference against my current bike, and by that I mean mainly acceleration/power wise, but Im hoping its better just about all round (maybe expecting too much there!), then I'll be very happy. Im not looking to be doing 200mph or anything!! Shocked Just want something different and with more power.

Cheers.

Steve.

Sounds like it's against their policy to help you. I'd go somewhere else. They could and should offer you a test ride if you're serious about buying and there's no problems with the bike.

Whether you notice a decent difference in power will depend how you ride. If you're happy revving the 600 to get full use of it, then it probably won't be significantly faster.
If you don't use the throttle as much, you may find you're faster riding the litre twin as when you turn the throttle the same amount in the mid-range you get more of a hit.

Certainly the litre four cylinder bikes have much more of a 'hooligan' reputation (well, accept the blade, maybe) than litre twins, I'd say.

Even a litre four cylinder bike will only be quicker at decently high speeds than a rider that's properly /trying/ on a sports 600.

The RSV-R is generally considered to be pretty good fast road bike; one that lets you concentrate on the handling and not worry too much about the engine.

Whilst Im not claiming to be able to thrash my gixxer to its full potential (probably far from it), I do feel as though I can confidently push it quite hard if I want. Ive had alot of time to get used to it, using it every day for work etc, so I think maybe Im getting bored & its a bit 'predictable' I guess. So when you put it that way, maybe I wouldnt be satisfied with the RSVR. Neutral Hmmm... certainly food for thought! Im not entirely sure what other options to go for, I just know I want to stick to fully faired, race style bikes (rather than naked ones etc), and that I want something a bit different than the norm. I would also fancy a Ducati (who wouldnt), but at the same time, Id also fancy having the money to buy a Ducati. Shocked

I think I'm gonna have to try & push for a test ride really. And as you say, if they aren't prepared to give me one I maybe shouldnt jump in just because I have some money burning a whole in my pocket from selling my pride & joy.

Thanks for your replies in any case! Thumbs Up

Me. Don't like the trendy-wine-bar image for a start, never mind lots of other factors Smile.

I would definitely get a test ride; twins suit some people, but not others. I suspect they're just fobbing you off; I'd expect them to be much more likely to offer test rides on second hand bikes; what's a few miles extra going to make when they sell?

if a dealership told me i could not have a test ride, because of their terms, part of my terms would be i cant buy this machine from you, there are plently of others out there, talk with your feet take your custom elsewhere and let them know. (i accept leaving a credit card you bend it mend it etc)

I went from a hornet 6 to a mille. It's super fast, but the handling and brakes can match it. If you can control your throttle hand(unlike me) you'll be fine with it. I sol mine because I thought I was going to end up banned. Laughing

I went from an rs125 to a RSVR...lmao.....not the best idea i`ve ever had.
Sold the rsvr within 3 months coz it`s a loony bike IMO and very hard to use on a daily basis.

I've tried a RSV Mille (not R version).

currently have a cbr 600 rr.

In comparison I'd say there is a noticeable difference in grunt and, although my ride was brief, I'd think that on a twisty track it would tear my CBR apart... especially the R version.

The downpoints are the sidestand and the crap rear brake. But let's face it, that's never gonna stop anyone buying a bike that you've fallen in love with!

Tell them that you're serious and that you're willing to leave a cash deposit in case of any breakages. Coz if you've got your heart set on that one, you might as well pester them before running off to another shop and comprimising on colour, etc....

Go for it, you wont regret it....

I'm biased though I went from a Thundercat to an 04 model RSVR last september and have just been lovin it since. Much like you I just went out one day looking at new bikes with no intention to buy then and stumbled accross the RSVR and fell for it.

As for power increase etc you may notice a huge difference depending upon how you ride, then agian you may not... though you'll probably find yourself going 10-20 mph faster without realising it, I certainly do as you don't notice the engine note change so much as you get quicker compared to a IL4. Also the handling is just so sweet, turns in sharp, tracks a lovely line and you can get a whole load of drive out the other end SO easily.

As for serviceing/parts, I've had no real problems so far, just find yourself a decent dealer/mechanic....though if i remember correctly wave has had a few issues Question

RSVR to ride would be a HELL of alot more challenging to ride than a GSXR, 600cc IL4s are effortless to ride and practically ride the bike for you, smooth.
RSVR like alot of the reviews ive read needs to be shown whos boss, before i fitted the damper i was constantly fighting to keep the steering striaght, also doesnt like being pissed around with in slow corners, ive had the front tuck about 3 times, nearly binning on every one.

Id say the RSVR is a more dangerous bike to own over something like a K8 GSXR 1000, not because of speed and power but because the gsxr is so smooth and effortless, where as the RSVR isnt nearly as fast its just unrefined and takes alot of getting used to, and some suspention set up.

My Ducati 749 S was pretty silky for a V-twin, but still nothing as smooth as a Inline 4.

Deffinatly try a V-twin before you commit as in my opinion very different to ride and you may not like them.
get a 2006+ RSVR if you do.

If you have not ridden a big twin before, make sure you get a test ride before buying...they are not everyones cup of tea. Significantly different power delivery than an il4.

I have a GSXR 1000 and have ridden several Milles. I would have one but do prefer the il4, that said I might buy a Tuono Smile

I recently went from an 03 636 to an Aprilia Tuono (same engine as the RSVR, and not at all 'retuned')

I can say that the difference between an IL4 600 and a V-2 1000 is, a whole shit load more torque, and a little more horsepower.

My ZX636 put out around 45lb/ft of torque and 109Hp, the RSVR will put out around 72lb/ft and 120hp.

Its a big difference, completely different power delivery and deceptively fast, but its not anything like the jump from a 600 to an IL4 1000.

In all, its a BIG upgrade, but don`t expect to keep up with Gixxer 1000;s, fireblades etc.

Although a 98 R1 will be even stevens Smile

Whish I'd had that advice before I took mine out on track after having it for a week(track lesson was pre-booked before I got the bike) as I had it tuck on me and did bin it Crying or Very sad though thankfully I was going fairly slow as it was on the hairpin at knockhill and the damage was mostly cosmetic...

+1 to trying before you buy..... they are very different from IL4's and some folk just dont like the Twin power delivery....

I'm a pretty slow rider so probably around the average.

In the real world a big twin will be quicker, I'm sure I'd be just as quick if not quicker on an SV than I am on my ZX6R. The difference I find for real world riding between a big twin and a 600cc four are the in gear acceleration from 3rd gear upwards.

I'm nowhere near good enough to notice any other real difference. So basically it makes it better for motorways (lazier) and for when you end up in the wrong corner coming out of corners.

I've ridden an early RSV and otehr twins, as well as a few 600cc fours.

Id say GPS would help more than a Litre Twin. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all your replies and advice, its much appreciated. Smile

Unfortunately my bike didnt sell Sad It fell short of the reserve by £99! Thankfully the highest bidder may still want it and he's gonna come view it tomorrow, so fingers crossed!

I think by the sounds of it I should definately take your advice & try a V Twin out before comitting. I dont want to dive straight in and make a mistake.

The bike I was interested in at the local dealers has sold now anyway! Doh! Must have been a sign though I think! Wink However, there is a chap local who has an '03 RSV Mille V60 for sale, mint condition with only >8000 miles on. He's wanting £3500 for it, and I think that sounds quite good? Still, I cant do anything til my bike goes anyway. I have attached a pic of the bike on offer.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a website or anything that shows all the different models? Im presuming there is the RSV 1000 Mille, RSV 1000R & RSV 1000R Factory? (maybe even a V60?). I may have picked up the wrong end of the stick but I cant find any dedicated website to explain it all!

Cheers.

Steve Smith.

3500 seems quite high for an old shape mille, try and get a new shape 2004 + model if you can.

You have the 98-00 Original RSV mille
Then you have the Updated 01-03
The high spec models of these bikes are the RSV-R but these only ran from 98-03 ONLY!!!!

in 2004 in a bid to confuse the world Aprilia lauched its base model called the RSVR.
04-05
Then they updated this model in 06-08
The High spec models of the 04-08 bikes is called the RSVR Factory.

To be honest, on your budget and given that you "aren't that fast a rider anyway" I would consider a Ducati 748/749.

Not quite as mental but still a lot of fun and you can get them quite cheap nowadays.....

Yea but you would get a bit of a hooker 749 for 3.5k.
you need a least 4.5 for a worthy one.

That's why I said 748/749.

Guess if 3.5 is the absolute limit, you're looking at a semi-decent 748 or a tatty 749.

And let's not forget those magic words.....

"slight cosmetic damage"

Dance!

I'll look around, see what I can get. Just dont want to leave it too long is all because my bike is my only form of transport other than buses! Confused Knowing me I'll end up with a GSXR 1000!! I've kinda fallen in love with Hayabusa's too, but I dont particularly want to die just yet! Shocked

Cheers again.

For that sort of money (£3500) I'd go with the crowd and seek out GSXR1000 (maybe a k3?) or Busa, maybe R1 02 for that dosh. Do have a mate with a Mille and he never had any bother with it whatsoever, he also has a 996 now and first thing he did (before he bought it) was find a friendly mechanic who could do all the belts and tricky stuff. Sort of tells you something when a rider of Italian bikes makes no special effort to look after one brand (Aprilia) and goes out his way before even owning another (Ducati).
