P.S I've just applied to join the RAF as an Aircraft Technician (Mechanical not avionics), good move? Bad move? Any hints or tips?

I reckon avionics is the way forward. I am an air engineering technician in the RN and avionics gives you a better skill set when you leave. One fella left as a Petty Officer Avionics and now gets 2 grand a week fitting wiring looms for airbus.

Which one? the one with the silver intake, or the one with the red intake?

Do some business & math classes while you're in so you can run a company when you get out instead of being the lower rung on the ladder.. & learn everything ya can about composites...
I don't do avionics, too nerdy.... Wink

FW190 pissed all over those barges (when they weren't being flown by 16 year-old rookies). Wink

See that doesn't sound too bad, but on the other end of the scale, being a mechanical engineer i'm sure Airbus would want people to tinker with their engines...and pay them a lot of money to do it as well. Can you ask your mate (If you're still in touch) about how much any of the mechanical engineers are on? Still, that'd be sometime away, i'll be in the RAF for about 8 or 9 years i reckon...

The one with the silver intake. Absolutely beautiful machine Drooling

Thanks for the advice mate. Matey i spoke to at my local AFCO is Avionics, 28 and is on 32K a year. I'd much rather go down the mechanical route though. What are composites?

At my kind of basic level....composites - engineering material made up of two or more separate constiuent parts, attempting to combine the better points of each of the material used.

I.e on an aircraft where things need to be tough enough but also very light.

For example, the RAF Harrier variant is made of of a large percentage of composites, compared with say the old Sea Harrier FA2 which had a large percentage of metal, mostly aluminium alloy.

Composites do have their significant disadvantages though, a major one being the possibility of barely visible impact damage. I.e. someone knocks into a part of the aircraft with a mobile crane, and although there would be appear to be no damage on the surface, there may be some serious damage below, that can only be confirmed by expensive/time consuming testing methods, NDT etc

This is about all I can remember without digging my notes out.
