brushing up on knowledge

Since i left school 2 years ago, i dont find myself thinking about things much in terms of math or english, science, etc, and i have noticed that i have forgotten so much of what i once knew, So I have been thinking recently that i would like to and need to brush up on my 'interlect' and knowledge of ... life i guess, this including history, maths, time, meanings, english, etc.
I was going to do this by reading alot of factual books on a regular basis, or does anyone know a quicker way or easier way to leanr things?

Sounds like a chore, you trying to punish yourself for something?

It's not a contest any more as to what you know or don't know, read about what interests you for as long as it does, and remember that most of what you learnt in school is completely useless, just like most of what those who chose to go to Uni to learn, will be equally useless when they emerge.

Knowledge of life, comes from living it, thats fairly obvious I would have thought, you make mistakes etc and go along like everyone else.

You will notice that very few people on here, come across on here as experts in every field (with a few notable exceptions, some less so than others ) learn about what is important to you, read a half intelligent newspaper every so often, or sit and let what nonsense Wikipedia throws at you seep into your subsconscious.

There isn't any right answer, but there is nothing to prove to anyone.

Depends why you want to do it really - do you just want to feel a bit more learned, or is it for career prospects? If it's the latter, I'd say don't bother and get yourself sorted in some specific field. If it's the former, the internet is a pretty good learning resource, apparently.

Was this possibly prompted by the amazing Derren Brown last night, with the guy who speed-learned thousands and thousands of books in a week? I was completely blown away.

Sometimes I just go to WH Smiths or something, and pick up New Scientist, sometimes the BBC History or Science magazine, and sometimes I pick up the Economist or Monocle.

Then I read them from cover to cover, even if its not a subject I'm specifically interested in.

And sometimes, I'm quite surprised what I learn. Then if something really interests me that I have read, I go and investigate it further (on the net, or at the library).
