Does it run okay on the choke?

My TZR does this and it's considered 'normal.'

hi,
presuming you have standard carb,
why not just turn up the idle speed a little?,(clockwise, iirc)
but if its idling at around 1500rpm, when warmed up,
i wouldnt bother.
perfectly normal for a 2t to not idle when cold.
just use choke for a bit.
full choke to start it,
then ease it off bit by bit, as it warms up.
as soon as it gets to 35 deg, im off!
slowly at first, obviously!
got a set of traffic lights about 500m from my gate, by the time i get to them,
it idles fine.
although i have never had to use the choke on both my rs's to start it with std carb & 34mm carb,
although the bigger carb does idle VERY low.
cheers,
GAZ

hi,
upon starting, it should idle with choke on???
tried pushing choke lever back a little once its started/
ie : full choke to start
1/2 choke to warm up to around 35,
then set off slowly, till warmed up...
then go for it! lol
i presume you have the standard carb?
iirc, stand at right side of bike,
look through the space in frame, at carb,
you will see idle adjust screw, its black plastic,
on side of carb.
whats it idling at when warm?
clockwise to increase,
anti-clockwise to decrease,
cheers,
GAZ

idles at 1.5k ish when warm, it will start on the choke but dies after a couple of seconds so i cant warm it up on idle, have to ride off straight away or hold the throttle a little.

hi,
correct idle speed is 1500rpm.
so if its idling at around that, its fine.
i have been informed by a couple of reliable sources ( & on here)
that you dont want to let it idle for any lenth of time anyway!
as it fouls plugs (as i found out)
just start it,(whilst sitting on it!)
blip the throttle a couple of times, though not revving over, say 3000rpm,
display should change quite quickly from "COLD" to approx 36deg,
i dont move till it nears 40, (not long)
then im off,
taking it easy for first couple of minutes,
untill its over 50degs,
then i can open it up.
had no problems since starting this routine.
cheers,
GAZ

well i try to hold the throttle at abut 2.5/3k till it stops saying COLD then try to stay below 5k untill its at 60 degrees. is my engine going to last a decent amount of time with this routine?

I'd say that's about right.

Mine won't even go into the powerband when cold, so I don't even try to go fast. Cue lots of short-shifting and slow acceleration but it's only for the first ten minutes or so, and then I can open it up and go for it.

Hi,
your routine sounds fine,
but when will it idle?
ie - at what temp, after how long etc, will it idle on its own?
mine will idle, (even when temp outside is minus 12deg!) after about 30 seconds to a minute after starting, temp guage will normally still be at "COLD" or 30deg+.
if you stay below 5 or 6000rpm till around 50deg, when first riding off, you will be fine.
so what your doing is perfectly safe, except for the first bit,
where your revving it straight after starting.
as long as you keep it low & dont do it for too long, you should be ok. (ie dont hold it there!)
just blip the throttle a few times,
this should be sufficient for it to idle on its own.
if it doesnt,
stick a new plug in,
always helps!
cheers,
GAZ

To be honest it sounds fine. Mine/none of the RS125s ive ridden will idle when cold either with or without choke.

I normally old the throttle at about 3,000 revs (choke off) for about 1 minute and by that time it should idle. Then i ride away taking it easy until its warm.

I had the extact same problem for over a year but i have managed to figure out a good system. Hopefully my experience will help you.

1. Make sure the idle screw is turned up enough , not too far though.

2. Leave the petrol tank switch off.

3. Pull choke out as far as it goes.

Then ride it a short distance , then stop for no more than 30 secs & turn the choke off & turn on the fuel tap.

Hope that helps you out.
