Hi All,

I'm currently helping my Dad re-build his GSX600F (1993 ish ...) as we're travelling down to the Le Mans Race in June and that's his target to re-build it for (after 7 years of being in bits).

However we're at the stage of firing up, first off nothing at all, turned over but no fire. Now the pistons and barrels all move freely and I was surprised, I thought there might at least be one stuck, but I suppose this just shows up the bulletproof bandit engine again.

The coils were putting out some decidedly dodgy readings, so both coils were changed. It now fires up, but only on 2 cylinders (1&4), so one coil works, one doesn't. Now both new coils were checked and gave perfect readnigs (which they should, both were brand new).

Also, both wires coming from the ECU to the non firing coil were tested for continuity and were fine. Now my Dad's been told the ECU cannot be tested on the GSXF and the Suzi dealers around here dont seem to have the diagnostic tools any more to test it.

Does anyone know if and how these can be tested, or how we can test the signal coming from the engine to make sure that's picking up the correct readings?

Any help would be appreciated, as me Dad's started getting worried (Started smoking again now too Rolling Eyes) and he's looking at picking up a cheap bike for the trip, but he now wants something bigger than mine lol ... Plus he really cannot afford it, so would be used for the trip and sold, but this really is the very last option even though he fancies another.

Thanks all,

Luke.

a cdi essentially does the same thing as the old points system, it basically makes and breaks a circuit to earth,
so you could check with some sort of test light as to wether it is or not, i would say that if you can turn the enging over by hand you should be able to test with a multi meter,

i have never tryed it myself but i think its worth ago Very Happy

The Signal Generator can be tested by cranking the engine by hand, but not 100% if the CDI will get any readings that way.

I know how these systems work as I've just recently completed a near 5,000 (with a 2,000 word limit Razz) word assignment at uni on ignition systems, but not totally confident on testing methods. Most can be tested via the elecy inside the CDI as we did this on car units, but most on bikes are sealed, so it's a case of only being able to test the visible input and output points.

Anyways, any more help most appreciated and hmmmnz, your advice shall also be considered Very Happy ...

Theres only one pickup so it can't be that. Have you tried swapping the coils over? Clean the connectors and check for continuity.

Easiest way to check is to swap the CDI out. Anyone close by willing to loan you theirs for an hour?

Sorry, forgot to mention, coils were swapped, cables tested, connections clear etc ...

Unfortunately no, I don't know anyone with one, neither does me Dad. He's bought another this evening anyway so will soon find out if it's that or not now anyway Rolling Eyes lol ...

change the black/yellow wire over with the white wire,
if the other plugs start to spark, then your cdi is the problem

do you know any one with a oil/air cooled suzuki?? a bandit or any of the gsxr600 through to 1100 will work
