ello.

ive just worn out my first set of tyres for my yamaha thundercat and starting lookng for replacements.

ive read a few bits online that say i can fit either a 160/60 or a
170/60.

id quite like the look of a slightly bigger tyre so am contemplating going for the 170.

what im wondering is if anyones actually tried this and had any problems or can forsee anything going horribly wrong if i give it a go.

any advice greatly received.

ta

gaz.

(In case it makes a difference i was looking at BT021s or Pirelli Diablo Stradas for the tyres)

i cant really see any major problems with fitting the 170 section as long as theres enough clearance in the swingarm area, whether youve got a hugger fitted etc.Dont be tempted to go any further than 10mm oversize as this may put extra stress on the rim/bead.I cant comment on the Pirelli option, but i am a Bridgestone fan..the 021 is a good touring compound tyre.If you want a softer compound, try the 014 compound.Hope this is of help.Tim Mr. Green

Why would you want a larger tyre? Its going to slow down your turn-in speed and totally change the feel of your bike.

was purely from a look perspective think a slightlier chunkier tyre would look better
i also guess that a bigger tyre = bigger contact patch = more grip so thought that maybe things would be slightly more stable and grippy in the corners?

wasnt really sure what sort of difference is would make to the handling so was just seeing if anyone had tried this before.

do you think that there would be a significant drop in turn in speed?

I got a puncture on the Hornet a while back and decided at the last minute to put a new tyre on rather than plug it, as there wasn't much life left in the old one. The best option the tyre place had in at the time was a 170 (as opposed to 180 standard) that was the same type as my front, I forget exactly what. I quite liked it and the bike definitely seemed to turn in quicker.

It did wear bloody quickly, though I wouldn't have thought that would be related.

I don't much see the point in moving to a wider tyre, the appearance thing is only minimal.

lol by about 5mm Very Happy if you want your tail higher then get shorter dogbones, 14 quid off ebay
a 60 will just have a higher profile with more room to roll, if you know what i mean,

Incorrect.

Same profile as a 160/60 would be a 180/55

Im running a 160/70 on my NC29 as apposed to a 150/70. And I feel it looks and handles better. Its got a taller profile now so the rear end is even higher, and it turns in just as quick, With more grip. Thumbs Up

Plus I can get my peg down, and Still have a 5mm fanny line (Chicken strip, Sissy line, whatever you call them). So i know I cant run out of rubber really.

thats just as close to the original profile as not,
i talk in approximations, i dunno about you but i don't live in a perfect world.

i would rather have a smaller profile tyre with less roll, than a taller one that turns you in faster.
you can do that just as easily by dropping the forks a few mm's through the yokes.
i think that would be by far the safer option Thumbs Up
