Clutch not fully disengaging? Can't put GSXR400 into neutral

Hi,

Just today I've started having problems with the clutch on my GSXR 400 (GK76A). When moving it's fine, though does sometimes feel a little harder to flick into the next gear.

However, when I come to a complete stop I just can't get it into neutral. The gear lever seems really really stiff, and takes a lot of force to get it to go up, which gets it straight to second and I can't get neutral. When I turn the engine off no problems just like when I'm moving, it slides gently and neatly between gears, but as soon as I'm idling and standing still, can't get to neutral, and general shifting is incredibly hard.

I think it must be rubbing and not fully disengaging because when it idles in gear with clutch in the bike pulls forward a little bit.

I've tried adjusting the clutch wheel thing by the clutch lever, but even with it all the way out (so you barely have to move it to disengage the clutch) the problem still persists. Following the cable to the clutch, I can't find anywhere else to adjust it.

What could be causing this? Would it be a relatively simple/cheap job to fix?

There is a screw and locknut adjuster where the clutch cable goes into the left hand engine side casing. Undo the locknut, turn the screw in untill it meets resistance, then back it off 1/4 turn and tighten the locknut.

Or it might just need an oil change.

Chain tension can make a big difference here too, I've had the exact same thing in the past and just needed to slacken off the chain.

Thanks guys. Interesting update, I just tried it again and it's fine! Knocks into neutral while running and standing no problem. Doesn't pull while in gear and clutch in, easy gear changes.

Could it be because it had a chance to cool down? It's been a hot day and I really thrashed it on the 40 min journey home as I was following a mate on an litre fazer exup. Could the tolerances be rather fine and when it heats up enough (the dial was just below half the way up the white) could the clutch plates, being right next to the engine, expand just enough to rub?

I'll leave it for now, see if it happens again, and if not I'll do what you suggest. (It had a complete oil change 2 weeks ago, chain also doesn't seem too slack so I'll have a look for that screw and locknut adjuster.)
