I only know my European swallows. Their speed is 40km/h, and their mating flying & aerial acrobatics are pretty amazing and a joy to watch.

Have never seen a swallow in London, though.

Actually your bog standard pidgeon can do 40mph+ and is one of the fastest birds in straight flight. This is why raptors (aka birds of prey) have to initiate a stoop dive from above and behind to excute a kill, raptors are surprisly slow in straight flight.

That was for a laden swallow, I don't know what the airspeed velocity was to be honest, I wasn't thinking of that at the time, so unfortunately this is of no use to finding an answer.
