Congratulations! You have been anointed to the lofty ranks of pond scum that run this country. As a reward our glorious herr leader has given you an unlimited budget and told you to sort out the nations roads.
What would your first order of business be?

Me personally? All speed cameras put on trial, any that cannot prove they reduce the number of accidents on the road are removed and thrown to the baying mob to be smushed.

More reasonable answers prefered cus we all know we want a private twisty/drag strip/arena road leading from our door to what ever destination we desire.

To educate normal police about when stopping motorcyclists is nessasary, and not just a measure to annoy them.

Also fill in all the low dips and potholes these days, hurts my arse after a long ride Laughing

Swindon has some upsides, can use 95% of them Mr. Green

Arrow scrap road tax and add on the price of petrol, therefore only those using will be paying.

Turn off traffic lights after 9pm. Use flashing amber like they do on the continent.

Keep speed cameras in 30 - have punishments for speeding at say upto 36 as maybe 1 point, but go rapidly up in 'punishment' very quickly after this point.

Start off with the motorway having a 90mph speed limit after 10pm with the 'tut tut tut' limit also raised from then (i.e. its at about 85-90mph now realistically) - Look into changing motorway speed limits at other times.

Some way of promoting good motorway driving. Simple things like signs saying "keep left" for example to remind those who just go into auto-drive and forget about it.

Could think of more things in time.

more work for recruitment consultants and estate agents who would be assigned the job of finding people jobs nearer their homes, or homes nearer their jobs

this would reduce the need for travel and reduce traffic

with smaller distances people would be more likely to use bicycles, mopeds or motorbikes, reducing traffic still further

traffic calming which restricts traffic flow, would be prohibited

a school bus system for all schools would stop school-run traffic problems

~ Complusory powered two wheel experience before qualifying to hold a class B licence.

~ Licence entitlements being subject to a basic qualification retest every three years

~ Catagory B1 being given with Class A entitlement rather than Class B

~ Funds raised by road tax to only be used for transportation infrastructure

~ Causing a death with a vehicle to result in loss of all vehicle entitlements, for life

~ Speed limits outside schools to reduced to 20mph from 8am to 6pm on school days, with speed cameras to enforce them

~ Al speed camera sites to be reviewed for seriousness and quantity of accidents, only those sites with good cause to be allowed to stand

~ Encourage the importation of more sub-33bhp bikes

Limiting the number of attempts for a driving licence of any sort to three. Retrospective licence removal for those that do not satisfy this requirement.

Removal of all speed limits and speedometers from every vehicle.

Undertaking permitted (although I think this may already be the case in the UK?)

Increase the number of mobile police patrols, trained to identify poor driving, since they can no longer bust you for slipping over the limit, only for driving inappropriately.

Banning of cars from city centres, after the development of 'park and ride' schemes with adequate provision for secure storage of shopping etc etc. Significant promotion of cycles as a method of transport.

That'd do for now.

i like the drivers must have road experience on a motorcycle rule,

i would have .

..learner drivers may not drive with out a passenger that has had their full licence for atleast 5 years
..new full drivers may not carry passengers for 3 years after they pass their test unless its there legal spouse or dependants
..new drivers are not to be out in there cars after 9 pm unless they have an exemption for work,
..the driving/riding age dropped to 15
.. all fuel tax to be lowered and to be used on the roads and road inprovements
.. road tax includes insurance
.. litter collection to all the people who receive the doll, no excuses
.. re open all previously closed rail lines
.. free public transport
.. speed cameras scrapped
..no more immigration unless they can speak fluent english before they arrive
..marijuana may be grown for personal use
..tougher sentances for hard drug users and sellers
.. the cane to be bought back into schools
.. children may not be out in the streets afterdark unsupervised
.. free fruit given at school, all food with higher than 5% fat or sugar to be banned from schools
.. all schools to have a field, a jungle gym, and basketball/tennis court
.. phys ed to be done for 1 hour per day
..

ok i know not all these are road related but hey Very Happy

Fix the fvcking roads or scrap fuel-duty. The amount we pay, for the absolutely disgraceful state of our roads, it's criminal fraud.

In fact, fix the roads AND scrap fuel-duty. We pay enough in road-tax already to pay for pristine tarmac.

Well if over 50% of the members who posted in this thread became minister for transport I think the countrys economy definately would come to a stand still. Laughing

I'd probably raise vehicle exise duty and reduce fuel duty by a slightly lower margin so that extra revenue could be generated for a much need overhaul of the UK's motorway and trunk road network. Would look at investment into rural road barrier to stop bikers crashing into ditches etc and encourage EU car manufacturers to look at ways of making cars more "Crash friendly", i.e better crumple zones and forced removal of A pillars.

Get rid of tax discs, that money can come out of current fuel duty. Everyone has fuel, therefore everyone would have tax. Big savings from doing away with that whole department of the DVLA. And fuel duty could still be lowered from current rates I expect.

National speed limits 'relaxed' during offpeak times. 20/30/40/50 limits only to be used where actually necessary rather than as vote winning gestures.

Children to be banned from being in the road, period. Same goes for small fluffy kittens. Without children or kittens the roads will be much safer places and everyone could drive quickly without having to worry.

Driving tests to include motorway driving.

Old people (60+ or 65+ I reckon) have to be declared medically fit to drive each year by their GP.

Nationalise public transport systems.

Ban all those who want to ban other groups. Wink

me getting a compulsory XR125 from the gov't to get to work Very Happy seriously though.. tax based on emissions, not engine size - ie. I used to drive a Discovery, it was a 3.9L V8, so tax was hellish - but it ran purely on LPG, so had no emissions apart from water Smile

I actually think relaxed speed limits on motorways could be easily implemented seeing as the government are so keen to get those big gantries for Active Traffic Management up and running, you could change the speed limits at night easily enough.

Reduce fuel duty and look at some sort of duty increase/decrease mechanism to stabilise the pump price at something reasonable like 70/75p per litre.

Probably keep bike taxes much as they are.

Go back to what car road tax was pre-2006.

Introduce some form of overtaking restrictions for HGVs to stop them blocking up the middle lane of motorways.

Get rid of the 2 year expiry on CBTs, keep the bike test as it is now.

Get rid of the 33bhp restriction (or reduce the period to 6 months).

Get rid of speed cameras and base prosecutions for speeding on whether or not you're endangering others. If you're not, then no prosecution.

Repeal the (adult) seat belt and helmet laws.

Arrow Invest heavily in the rail freight system to bring national coverage back to 1960's levels. Subsidise it heavily enough to drive HGVs off the roads. This would both ease congestion and reduce damage to road surfaces.

Arrow Do away with bus lanes altogether, no buses larger than a 32 seater allowed. Preference for 16 seaters. Bus lanes are a pointless exercise because people need to be able to park in them to load/unload. The space occupied by them is disproportionate to the benefit.

Arrow Do away with the DVLA. Unemployable Welsh people will have to find something else to do. All functions should be included in the MOT process. You should MOT once a year. This gives you a new registration plate for that year.

Arrow State run insurance. The MOT plate also includes basic third party insurance. If you have a plate, you're insured. Fire, theft and comp insurance still up to private companies.

Arrow Road tax abolished along with the DVLA, incorporating it with the price of fuel removes the ability to evade. High users (either by mileage or engine capacity) pay more making the system fairer.

Arrow Optional "continual training" done volountarily with registered driving instructors. Gives 'points' that can be offset against the price of the mandatory insurance.

Hi

Eliminate the tax disk. No reason for it except as an expensive to collect tax. Could be replaced with a nominal increase in fuel duty (while there may be an argument for a registration fee, having any kind of remaining fee would only mean it would be dramatically hiked up in a few years).
Limit the number of speed cameras. I would suggest a limit of 1 camera per 1m population per county.
Eliminate the motorway speed limit but enforce decent driving standards (eg, clamp down on the centre lane owners club and tail gaters).
Make licence points something you get more of with experience and loose for offences.
Large road building program (we have the results of getting on for 20 years worth of dithering to catch up on).
Fuel duty to be based on the calorific value of the fuel. Removing any farting around with duties for specific fuels depending on what is in fashion that year.
Allow bikes to use bus lanes. Indeed allow everyone to use bus lanes.
Put serious effort into phasing traffic lights to keep traffic flowing (rather than impeeding traffic).
Refuse planning permission for any office building that does not have adequate parking (would reduce the amount of offices in city centres, plus remove all the congestion caused by people trying to find a parking spot).
Include a motorway test as part of getting a full licence.
Include a skid pan session for new drivers, not to teach them how to control it but to prove that they can easily loose it.
Remove the 56mph speed limiter from lorries.
Invest in some way to allow small loads to be effectively, quickly and cheaply loaded onto the railways (could be an automated container system, so a lorry is only required for short journies from a local rail depot to shops).
Invest in broadband systems to reduce the need for people to have to attend their workplace all the time.
Encourage flexitime so remove the major rush hours.
Restrict the use of oversize loads during peak hours (eg, the boat using 2 lanes of the M40 a few weeks ago, doing about 30mph so even the HGVs were using the right hand lane to overtake it).

All the best

Keith
