To blag your job as something else on insurance when they ask

My quote without a job at all with mce was 371 per year,
Just tried online quote with same options 5 months after i took the policy out and put my occupation as "Paint sprayer" and the quote for the year is now £717.01

How does the occupation make such a difference Shocked

Cause if you are working you are commuting to work and therefore are on the roads more often?

Does that not come under ticking the box for including commuting though?

I thought that putting your job down is just so they can roughly guess what sort of income you are on.

They categorise job types into certain risks, not sure how they decide what is what risk each one is

Journalist and TV presenters are high risk ones

Yeh that's a good point thinking about it.

Well they might be looking at a database of who crashes the most and maybe paint sprayers have a knack for accidents? I remember I couldn't put my dad on my policy cause he's in the forces (pissed me off as I couldn't cancel it at that point).

Anything in the motor industry is too. . . and teaching. I can understand for life insurance, but it is not that logical for private vehicle insurance. I guess it makes the companies more money! Rolling Eyes

Hmmmm, maybe it depends on company too, a mate of mine works in a bike shop and has to just put 'retail' for it to not be sky high. I guess you struck lucky! Thumbs Up

Retail is a good category for cheaper quotes and covers a lot of work place's.

Journalism/broadcasting is expensive since your more likely to have 'valuable' people in the car.

Bar/restaurant is high due to being more likely to have had a few drinks ("2 pints and one for you love" soon gets the barmaid drunk)

As of 25/05/08 i no longer have to regularly attend lessons at 6th form, i therefore am not classed as a student in my mind so as far as the insurance is concerned for car and bike next year i am a sales assistant in retail, save's me about £400 on the car alone! Plus i do more hours at work than lessons anyway. With a bit of luck it should go down next year if i get the management post i am hoping to get. My dads a manager and his quotes are rock bottom (group 12 car (very high theft risk aswell), 50, full NCB, low risk area = £200)

Well my dad was a journalist by trade (worked in the BBC world service). Rex Judd sorted out the insurance for the first year and they wanted 400 quid because he was a journalist. Year after, he described is line of work as a translator - lo and behold - 89 quid. Technically all he did was translate current affairs and broadcast it. He doesn't go out hunting for scoops and stories like tabloids do so thought it was unfair to be paying silly money.

Because i'm on my industrial placement and i do commute, i did an online quote to see what the difference between classifying myself as a Metallurgist (Materials engineer) and a student was - it was 15 quid - right, metallurgist I am Wink Laughing can work either way. I'm not lying, since that's what i do, i'm working, BUT i'm also classed as a student. Don't ask, don't tell. I DID however tell them i was commuting to and from ONE place of work which was the truth, address details, level of cover and security were all correct.

Correct. Some professions are more likely to have expensive accidents, so the Insurance companies stack those premiums.

It's no different to certain bikes being more likely to have expensive accidents, so the Insurance companies stack the premiums for those.

Ditto for age and road experience.

Well if they got a Motor trade policy it would drop considerably.

Insurance don't like motor trade on anything else as they know they will ride anything allegedly on the shops insurance so bump it up higher than it would be with a full traders policy.

Try this link. you put in your profession and it tells you other similar professions which will save you money. Don't lie as you'll get screwed in a claim, but do re-assess what you'd call yourself.

edit: Link works (so does the English)

but what about saying that you commute / don't commute? if you click ' excluding commuting', does that mean you're not covered if you decide to ride to work one day as its 'nice weather'? Apologies to go a little off topic here

Nahh they just ask you because if you are going to commute to work everyday you will be on the road more often and more likely to have an accident.

I just think that is a con really. I'm telling them how many miles a year I'm going to do so what does it matter if I'm doing them while commuting.

I commute to college and work on my scooter but I never told my insurance company. If I crash, I was going to/coming back from a mates house. They don't know any better and it saves me £50.

i dont have commuting insurance, if i went to work on my bike i'd just say i was heading into town and parked at work.

of course they will probably then ask my work who being a company would say i was at work and therfore i would have commited fraud and my insurance would be cancelled.

bugger. :'(
