PostPosted: 21:44 - 08 May 2008    Post subject: How to move away (within UK) Reply with quote

Hi everyone. I want to move away, I live in south wales with my parents now and i work for my father. It isnt a great job and i dont enjoy it, but as it worked out more money than working at a local shop i took it anyway. the problem is, i have been 'friendly' with a girl from waterlooville, hampshrie/portsmouth and we have met up a few times over the last few months and things are going well. being of that sort of age now i want to move out of my parents house, to do this though i need a job which covers rent, bills etc and obviously some place to go. i do like the area that i live in, but fancy a change now so i want to move away. and as things are going well between me and this girl i want to move closer to her - but how can i find a job when im 200 miles away? sorting somewhere to rent shouldnt be too difficult once i have a job, and i can always stay at her parents house or in a B and B for a while or somewhere until i get sorted for myself.= for proper. but how do i go about securing a job in hampshire or portsmouth - or further if needs be cos i dont mind communiting to work a bit. obviously it will be difficult for me to attend interviews when im so far away, and it will work out very expensive for me to travel there for an interview several times whilst trying to find work.
does any one have any advice - not the whole ' dont move out and away in one go, or dont move away to be with a girl it wont work out' cos if it doesnt work out, ill be in a new area and ill find someone new! i need to get away and start a-fresh.

or - does anyone from these local-ish areas know of jobs going or have jobs going which would help me? im not really fussy on what i do for now, i just want to get started - i can always look for another job which i enjoy in a few months or a year once im sorted.

thanks for all advice.

You sound like me 4 years ago, and again nearly 7 years ago,

How to apply for jobs? , the normal way send in CVs , apply online phone them up, with the local fish4site.

If you are starting out fresh its going to be a game of numbers, when I left Manchester a few years ago (note I came back) ie expect a 2-5% response rate, and a 25% interview rate of t he 2-5%. Group interviews within a couple of days and travel to them.
stay somewhere cheap like a B&B or a travel lodge travel lodges aren't cheap £50 a night , but okish , you can tent it if you want too!.

This is what I did you will get many bad people out there I travelled all the way to Penzance for a job that did not exist since they interviewed people to set their salaries, it still irks me that, however I had 5 other interviews lined up, and snagged one of them.

Once you get experience it becomes easier, you may also need to take a lower paid job for a while to get your foot in depending on your industry or just a Mcjob for now , Mcjobs can be quite well paid I worked in a pie factory loading boxes onto pallets worked out at 7.50-8.25 an hour.

Meat packing seems common too , done that many times pay is about 6ph but you stink of rotting flesh, but any job'll do.

However do not fall into the trap, and budget appropriately

I know an awful lot of people who fall into this and I lived like this for a bit , I have NOTHING to show but work experience from this period.

Ie where you spend 40% on rent , 15% on utilities 25% to the tax man 10% on food 10% on stuff, it is a terrible way to live.

Well if it were me I'd go down with a few cv's and drive round looking for something around there,or if your lazy go on the job centre direct site and have a good look using the postcode at her house and about 20 miles around then try and arrange for a few interviews on one day.

thanks for that advice. im going to have to save up a bit so i can afford to travel and stay there when i sort some interviews out.
i think i might try and force conversation with her parents into the direction of me moving away and that i want to go there and see if they say i can stay there till i sort something - i'll pay them rent obviously but i think then i'll have more of a chance cos things will be cheaper.

thanks again, and any more advice is welcome cos im really starting to get annoyed by not being able to move away - spose im sort of felling ' i want that and i want it now' which isnt helping me at all!

You are moving for yourself right? , and not purely for a this girlie right?.

Although my post 'woman trouble' looks like I am moving out for this girlie I've met she is just the icing on the cake if she is still there when I eventually make my move out there.

Love does NOT conquer all , and remember alot of men and women play grass is greener all of the time and thus as said if you get yourself into a trap as described above people start looking for alternatives.

My planned 2009/10 move is for better careeristic prospects , low tax rate and lower cost of living as well as low crime rates there.

yes. deffinatley for me, the reason for moving to hampshire is more to do with her - but the fact that im moving away is just for me - and as i have no preference on where to go, where she lives is the better option for now.

Move out mate, but not to fooking Hampshire! I lived there for four years and it really is pump. Roads are terrible, and terribly congested. Soton is dull as shit, Pompey seems to have a better vibrancy, but is the poorer cousin - like Sunderland is to Newcastle. Not a good place. Expensive too.

As for meeting new people if it doesn't work out, do not under estimate how hard it can be to meet new people when you move in to a new area alone.

I moved in to a new area with a mate and if I hadn't moved in with a mate chances are I wouldn't have done any socialising at all in the 2 months I've been here. Fact is most people don't go to work to make friends, they go for money and that's it.

In the past 2 months I've spoken to 2 girls who I'm now on a friendly basis with. Other than that I've met nobody else locally. Best idea is to find out if there's any courses/hobbies you can take up locally, I've made a lot of friends through doing comedy and an improv course.

Personally I'd say you're moving for all the wrong reasons, your motivation is for a girl and telling your self it'll be good anyway if it doesn't work out and it won't be.

thanks for the new replies.
if i do move away i really think we will be together for a while and so we will socialise together and then i'll meet other people that way - as well as just making friends with other people when out on my own or whatever. and if we do split up, im really not bothered about being alone anyway - even though i live with my parents, i spend as much time away from them as possible and very very rarely meet up with friends i know from school or college. i know that living alone and being alone wont be all that great - but i know i can handle it as long as i can pay for everything - which if i can afford to keep the two of us then on my own i'll be fine too. besides, i am moving away for me and not just to be with her - though that is obviously a large factor of it. if i stay at home i'm likely to just stay working for my father and i cant afford to move out and its really depressing me cos of the arguments and stress of working together. im known to be a miserable person, but that's cos of the stress i get from parents, and not really meeting anyone at all. i need to start new, new place and new people - i'll force myself to go out and meet people then cos i'll have no one. here i want to but dont need to, if i move away then i'll feel that i have to and so i will. and i know that every desicion i make will change something, where as when im here i just come back home and its the same old as every other day - and i cant stay living like this.

Depends on what kind of work you want to do mate ..
I work for Scottish & Southern energy which have offices all over the country including Portsmouth and Basingstoke. Good opportunities for long and short term careers and the pay isnt too bad.

My favourite bit of Southampton are the clubs on a retail park by the harbour Laughing

Calum, start off just doing totally trivial work to get some work in. Get your CV to an agency and get some low paid work where no interviews are required just for a month till you get your feet and can get applying elsewhere.

But really, Waterlooville?! Surprised
The best bit about that Southampton / Portsmouth area is the Hein Gericke Laughing

thanks for that info shay.
the problem with just doing any old work without an interviwe is the money wont be enough to sort out rent and stuff, so i need a job which can do that too. the scotish and southern energy thing seems ok - i think im going got have to go back and see this girl and have a chat with her parents about the whole idea, and see if they are willing to help me out at all, perhaps let me stay there or something.

the other good thing about the waterlooville area is the ride through petersfield and up to winchester - the A272, that road is probably one of my favourites now !

There is one good section on the A272 - as you go up the hill under the trees in the twisty bit, just outside of the village from the A3. Rest of it you need to be doing some serious speed to enjoy. Triple figure speeds.

The billions of coppers on that road don't appreciate that behaviour.

Chock full of traffic too.

In a word, pump.

And Shay, you are bang on the money. At least you live in the only town in that area which is reasonable. Shame that it is populated by utter cunts tho. Good farmers market, however.

Stay up north, it might be cold, but there is some space, and fewer nobs.
