How annoying, I missed it, due to Mingles and I being in a taxi crossing London - forty seven quid later! ... He doesn't seem to like buses much (but then, who does!) ... and it seems he doesn't like East London either, as the closer we got to Docklands, the louder he miaowed).

Sort of related, I recently read 'Hells Angels' by Hunter S Thompson, supposedly a true documentary from a guy who used to hang around with the American HA's in the 60's and 70's.

The thing is, I don't think modern-day Hells Angels are anything like that.

I know one guy, but I don't really want to ask him what goes on, as he probably wouldn't tell me anyway.

I used to look at the 1 % ers with naive adulation, but when you look at them properly its a joke. The prospects have to be a bitch for everyone, "for months, sometimes years". So in essence you have to be a bitch to a fat bloke with a beard and a harley. No thanks chaps.

Makes me laugh, they may have that brotherhood thing going on but no more than any other "normal" gangsters and "normal" gangsters don't make you wear leather waistcoats either.

Making a ritual of joining a club is very silly and naff, throw back to Eaton and the universities of prefects and the like. Perhaps they wanted it to be what they thought the rituals were for indians to become men but more like a Cedric in Oxford being rogered so he can wear the school tie. Then they try to be all hard when really they are just criminal thugs. there is no Difference to joining the Masons or the Labor party except they are on two wheels riding crap bikes.

I believe the '1%' thing was used by most outlaws, not just the HA's. It was used to signify that you were part of the 1% of the motorcycling community which the American Motorcycle Association didn't want anything to do with.

Not sure about ALL 1% clubs, but the one that I was in for 13 years (probably the best knownof them all) had no initiation rituals, no need to be somebody's "bitch" to prospect, no unusual, wierd or perverse rules - just biking and true brotherhood - as sexist as that may be deemed to be.
There were jobs to be done within the club - just normal, practical, day-to-day things, like in any family or community, but we all took care of them - members and prospects alike.
Prospecting is simply about the club making sure that the prospect is right for them and the prospect making sure that the club is right for him/her - simple! I know there are lots of tales and stories, ut believe me, I prospected 14 years ago and I have NEVER been a bitch for anybody.
I am a little overweight and I do have a beard - but then so did my ex-mother in law . . . . .
