Well my CBR has been sat in the garage for about 2.5 weeks. Its not been started and has been covered. Got back home from uni today to find it ticks over but then cuts off if i rev it up?

Neutral light on, choke on, push the starter button... ticked over and ran on choke for a couple of mins. Then i thought i'd rev it up a little and it just cuts out.... (I'm new to bikes. Just passed my DAS last month.) Maybe i'm just not letting it warm up??

Also, I noticed the rev counter doesn't rev up and down? Is this normal?

Wanted to ride it now as well! This evening!! Crying or Very sad

Rev counter should be indicating around 1000 rpm at tickover.

Can you turn the throttle real slow without it cutting out? Try giving the plugs a clean.

Funny thing is, when I saw the bike before I bought it it was ticking at just under 1000rpm. Now its just on the flat line at 0.

Will try the slow throttling and then I will give the plugs a clean with the old wire brush and try again... Thumbs Up

Reckon the bike needs new plugs, oil filter (current one looks like its been there for years!), etc doing anyhow...

I'm thinking it could be either - dodgy from the start or some sort of problem due to it being left standing for 3 weeks.

Cheers for the replies.

Well folks... I didn't have the right size spark plug socket so could'nt check the plugs.

What i did notice was that the leads didn't look like the correct ones... the spark plug leads were not the type that fit over the groove on the engine. They just went inside the hole. I'm pretty sure that they are not how they are meant to be - very dodgy looking!!

I tried to start the bike and it was doing the same. Now the battery has gone (almost) flat. It dies down so i have just left it for now. Going to get a battery charger and some new plugs and leads - that should do it I think.

One question - will a car battery charger charge up a bike battery?

the cbr can be a bugger start if left for long periods of time. That said, if you can start with choke and leave it for a couple of mins, you should be safe to rev/choke off.

If not you've got issues.

Dont know if a car charger will throw out too much amperage for a bike battery to take?

have a look at the car charger rating and the bike battery will have a charge rating and see.. some cars are only trickle so are fine i have personally used car chargers but that is no endorsement as i am sometimes a muppet! if u start it can you take the choke off and then once its settled let it rev... and your rev counter should work all the time!

Heres what happened today....

1) Checked voltage on battery - showed 12.08V (i.e. "needs charging" voltage)
2) Charged up battery (1hour at 4A (quick charge) as per bike manual)
3) Checked battery voltage after charge - showed 13.10V (i.e. a good strong voltage I'm thinking?)
4) Connected battery to bike.
5) Choke on - tried to start. Spluttered and fired up with a nice but short (1sec) sound of a viper can, but then cuts right off again.
6) Choke off - the same.
7) Checked voltage on battery and it was down to 12.80V (normal i suspect - especially after a few (10-15!) no starts??)

Could it be the ignition leads? Starter motor? Ignition coil? Plugs? ALL of um?

p.s. the choke cable has some sort of cut in it - could this affect starting? Mind you, I have squeezed the sides of the cable with my fingers and turned choke on and off and there is some choke cable movement within it - so think this is ok.

Pumped the fuel line a few times and it starts up ok. Just wont hold revs. Have to use choke at 2-3k rpm to keep it running. Won't stay on otherwise.

Possible air filter blockage? Fuel filter blockage? Fuel line blockage? Spark plugs need replacing? HT leads? All of the above? Lol.

how long have you left the bike standing again? If its only a couple of weeks, its doubtful but you may have plugged yer jets from old fuel.

Otherwise im really at a loss. As for your frayed choke cable, if you know how to get your fuel tank off, air filter and have a look. you'll see the cable at the front of the trumpet/air stacks. While you're at it, give the air filter a good looking over. etc.

Mebbe worth trying a bit of redex and some fresh fuel and see how it goes. if it still aint playing, might be worth to throw at a garage unless you're savvy?

To eliminate blocked breather pipes just open the fuel filler cap and try it like that.
Just dont spill any petrol, or smoke while doing it for obvious reasons, also ensure you are in a well ventilated area, not in an enclosed garage / shed. Smile
