PostPosted: 19:37 - 09 May 2008    Post subject: Found out why my engine is noisy :(~ UPDATED~ Reply with quote

After trying a few different thing's i mentioned in THIS thread and having no luck,i went to a kawasaki dealer for a quote to sort it out.
They reckon the bottom end is flucked Crying or Very sad and will cost more to repair than the bike is worth Crying or Very sad .
I'm absolutely devastated.

It runs perfect other than the noise, and fires up at the first press of the button, and i have covered quite a few miles on it,but the mechanic says i cant use it anymore.
They reckon when the bottom end fails completely, the engine will seize and lock the rear wheel up.
Obviously dangerous so that's the end of that.
Engines for this bike seem to be like rocking horses shit to get hold of so the bike is a complete loss.

Sorry no real point to this thread, just makes me feel a little better putting into writing like this.

If anyone does know of an klr650 engine for sale feel free to post up about it Thumbs Up

Crying or Very sad
There goes my scotland trip next month Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I seen that one.
The fact that the side covers have been taken off looks a little suspicous to me,and at £274 quid,it's a big gamble.

Allways dodgy buying an engine you cant hear running.

Thanks for trying anyway Thumbs Up

If it's still running perfect apart from the noise keep riding it until it goes bang.

You might aswell if you are just going to replace the engine.

You never know, there could be thousands of miles left in the engine.

Sorry to hear about that. Yeh seizures while riding are not fun. Been there, done that. When my GY125's first engine om nom nommed its crank.

Sidecovers are often removed to be sold seperately. So I wouldnt worry about it.

Good Luck in getting stuff sorted.

Hell of a risk to take if the wheel could lock up.
I dont usually ride slow either Laughing

Didn't read that Embarassed The mechanic would have to say that though because you do have serious issues with the engine but I assume you rode it to the garage and back.

As BLUEX5 said, just keep riding it and keep the clutch lever covered.

I have a mate who had one - they engine has all the refinement of a tractor engine. It'll go forever and the odd knock at low revs may not be a problem. You want to see the size of the piston in there.

If it's a chain-rattly noise you are worried about, there's a manual cam chain adjuster on the back of the barrel, and you do know what that bolt right at the bottom of the bottom picture is for??

The bolt at the bottom of the pic,is for the balancer chain adjuster, which is still working perfect, with plenty of tension on the adjuster spring.

As for the manual cam chain adjuster,i have seen the bolt, and noticed in the manual it has a long spring attached to it,but i dont understand what im supposed to do with it to adjust it.The bolt is allready tight so it's not just a case of tightening/loosening, i dont think?

But the tractor thing is about right Laughing ...

The engine has only done 23k kms and it's got full tax and m.o.t. on it Crying or Very sad .

Thumbs Up

Could do.
I have literally rode it for hundreds of miles in one go the way it is,so could probably just keep using it but be a little more carefull.
Might aswell get full use out of the full tax and test.
It's definately going to take the fun out of riding, having to constantly worry if it's gonna go bang.

Thumbs Up

Just make sure your wearing your gear.
if it goes bang and locks up, youll feel it, whack the clutch in and break using the front brake i think is the best to do? someone will know better i dont get in many slides for that reason alone.

As has been said not like you can do much more damage to a engine thats "already fuckd"

You know the shit thing about it.
I got the bike from a bike shop, and he assured me that all "thumper" engines sound like this.
I did'nt get any reciept,or any other proof that i bought it from him.Even the log book was'nt registered to a buisness,so im guessing i dont have a leg to stand on there.

I'm thinking about going up there and giving him a slap upside the chops for being a dick.
I suppose that's the risk you take when you buy an old bike, without knowing what your doing mechanically Evil or Very Mad

That could be unreasonable.
he might not of known it was on its way out,
I think its how you 'abuse a engine' which shows how long its going to last pretty much.

If it was my last chance id do back to him and try it on, but probably wont get anywhere with it.

He deals mainly with cruiser bikes, and says he has a load of experience with big cc single cylinder bikes,so i'm pretty sure he would have known the noise was'nt normal.
And yes i do tend to rev pretty hard, but never any where near the redline on this bike.Highest i usually take it is to 6krpm at very most and the redlins is 7.5k rpm. This noise has been there since i bought the bike,so it's definately not through me mis-treating it.
I have serviced it 3 times in the few months i've had it.
But like you say,it's unlikely i'll get anywhere by going up there and having a go at him.
(would make me feel a lot better though Twisted Evil )

I suspected something simple like this all along,i think i'll go and get a second opinion on it today.
Theres a small back street bike shop who do repairs,so i'll take it to them and see what they say.
Should'nt cost too much just to have the timing checked.

Thumbs Up

UPDATE:

So much for kawasaki telling me the engine is scrap Laughing

It is now fixed (by me!) and running like a dream, the engine is really quiet and smooth, and no longer pops like mad from the exhaust while decellerating.

OH man im soooo happy right now. Laughing
I know it's just a bike, and a shitty old one at that, but it's my bike and im smiling from ear to ear.
I feel like i have just won the lottery.
