the bike can't be more than 3 years old as i was looking at them when they'd just come out, about the same tiume i was getting my NSR.
At the time I liked the look and the comfort but i'd heard they struggle after 50mph. I'm guessing they'd do about 65 and are comfy economical mile-munchers as long as motorways aren't involved.
The bellypan's definitly a no-no for me but i'd definitly stick it back on come winter.
£2400 does seem a lot for a second hand 125, as I got my XJ900 for half of that. You would definitly find better value in another 125. I made the bad mistake of getting new NSR and selling it 6 months later and still paying for it now
Do you have any need for going on the motorway in the next couple of years? If so you may well find the bike restricting. It's more powerful than the NSR in standard form, and definitly sounds better.
Look through second hand bike sections, or pop into a dealer to ask what the "book price" would be for one to give you an idea of how much it is worth.

| Dr Cabbage wrote: | i wanted to ask you about the oil. how often do you have to fill up, and where can you get it from. also, how much does it usually cost? |
Depends on the bike. 2 stroke oil costs from around £2 a litre to around £10 a litre. High performance 2 strokes need decent 2 stroke oil, and they will use a litre every 200~600 miles. Probably around 300 miles to a litre is usual. Gearbox oil will need changing occasionally (likely to only be 800cc~1L of oil in the gearbox, and it should not use any between services).
A 4 stroke will use some oil, and will need more frequent oil changes (my old CB100N years ago used virtually no oil for the first 600 miles, then drank it between there and 1000 miles when it had an oil change).
| Dr Cabbage wrote: | finally, if you igonre extra power (it will have to be restrited to 15bhp anyway) what are the other adv/dis adv in 2 stroke vs 4 stroke? |
General servicing on a 4 stroke will be more expensive (valves need checking, more frequent oil changes generally, etc). A 4 stroke is likely to be better on fuel, but is also likely to be more expensive to buy (more complex to manufacture). A 2 stroke is likely to need major engine work at a far earlier time in its life (but that engine work will be easier than on a 4 stroke).
Power wise not many 4 strokes actually manage to make as much power as you are allowed as a learner.
All the best

About the Belly pan, its not really that great, probably serves more purpose than mine though in that you can wipe the grit/mud/road kill off it, if i had the bike i would....well i wouldn't ____________________ Chase my Witch up, Catch my Snitch up.

sorry for the late reply everyone, but i've been a bit busy of late...
@ G,
i would like to get a bike over a car for a few of the following reasons: avoiding traffic, good fuel economy, thinking of moving to london for uni (congestion charging), and most of all... FUN! but seriously, this isn't just some whim i had one day, i have thought into this quite heavily. oh and another reason: cause i'm so tall, i find it very difficult to fit into cars (and as my first few will have to be small ones for insurance), so a bike seemed ideal in that respect.
also, when you say an ns125, do you mean the cagiva scooter or the madami dirt bike (or an entirely different one)?
i also have another question (for everyone):
am i right in thinking that if i were to get a provisional licence now (@16) and learn to ride a geared bike, come my 17th birthday, i could do the test on a 125, and instantly move up to a bigger bike (say a cb500 or something like that (restricted to 33bhp)) without having to ever buy a 125?
can this not be done, or do you advise against it?
cheers,
Loz |
