My Euro tour starts 6th June from Wolverhampton (ignore the fact I live in Norwich), to a festival in London for 3 days then over a month and around 4000miles around Europe and back to Norwich.

At the moment I don't have any breakdown cover.

My insurer Ebike will not allow it as an extension as i'm on a PAYG policy. I can't change insurer as 1 more month and I get a no claims bonus.

Who do you recommend for cheap but good European breakdown cover?

And what's the worst that can happen if my engine goes kaput in Germany, Poland etc..

Hear hear, I'm interested too specifically:

Insurance that repatriates you, I can only find to the nearest garage type insurance (Bikesure) , and haven't hassled Carol Nash yet, sort of like the kind Maurice had on his 2004 tour..

I don't fancy Gaz Haynes method of bike touring insurance, ie take off the number plate , grind off the VIN/frame number push it into a bush and torch it.

I've just been looking into this, rung up RAC (Who I have a UK policy with for the car), and they've quoted me £72 for the two weeks I'm going to be away. This includes bringing the bike back home, and a hire car for the rest of the trip.

Really don't know whether to cough up for it or not though, as the only reason I'll use it is if a bin the bike (Which I don't intend on doing!). If the bike breaks down, most things can be improvised to get me to a local garage if needs be.

Anybody any thoughts, or cheaper quotes from anywhere else ?

Carole Nash does repatriation insurance 43 for 2 weeks.

Adrian flux on the phone they say their policy has repatriation but when you read the small print it says nearest garage.

I think the best policy is EH111 and taking it easy, break downs I can deal with since I check the bike over do preventative maintanance like bring a spare reg rec . And do the brakes, chain etc before hand.

What I can't be doing is if I bin it end up with a broken leg (EH111 should cover this) and a huge bill for bike + body repatriation.

Thus rule #1 is ALL important:

Always take it easy until you have had a chance to recon the road, I forgot this last year and binned the bike, I still recon the 675 before I start doing a casey stoner on it.

Greenflag are known to be reliable in europe. Failing that, you could try europassist (sp?) who broker through CIA.

Worked for me everytime.

You'll pay through the arse for euro recovery on a bike over 10 years old (unless you sort it out through your insurance).

Yes ....but I found their insurance wasn't very good, they wanted £340 for CBR+NTV with no more than 5000 miles , tons of security needed no pillions , brick garage etc no TP on other bikes.

While OTOH bikesure did it unlimited miles
TP on other bikes
protected no claims
legal
Europe for 6 months

I've just taken out a short term European breakdown policy with Vehicle Rescue Direct https://www.vehicle-rescue.com/ who are basically AXA Assistance/InterPartner Assistance, for my trip to the Nurburgring next weekend.

As far as I can see no only are they one of the cheapest, but they provide pretty much everything you want from a European policy without excluding all the little bits that can catch you out.

Whether they are any good in the event of a breakdown/accident remains to be seen, but hopefully I won't need to use them. Thumbs Up

hmm UK and Europe cover - quite good.

But I don't understand the whole pretrip inspection stuff. Does that mean that before I leave I must take my bike to a mechanic and have him/her inspect the bike?

Found a better solution for Europe https://www.adac.de/

€78 and covers more countries for longer than any UK service I have found.

Here's what the FAQ says:

Q. How strict is your policy with regard to vehicle serviceing? My car has recently had a major service (80k), as specified by the manufacturer, by a reputable garage. The previous service was quite basic and hence I did it myself. Given that I can't present evidence of this service (via the log book) would this in any way restrict my ability to make a claim?
A. The insurance is based on servicing being carried out within the manufacturer's recommended schedule. As you are evidently keeping up with major services and carrying interim services (presumably oil-changes etc.) yourself there is no problem. Always make sure the car is serviced properly before you contemplate a trip to Europe

I wonder how that affects me, I have a 10 year old bike and I do all the servicing myself. I don't have any service history for the bike from when I bought it. Guess I might have to drop it into a Mechanic before I go away next for a check over just to show due dilligence
