Over the last week i`ve carried on using my textiles in the heat but today (for the first time ever) i chanced a quick spin up the road for some cigs in just jeans and a flimsy ski jacket (coz it`s got loads of vents and it`s very comfy).
Now...i know there`s bugger all protection in the above garments but i can`t get over how good it was to ride "naked" so i`m looking for ideas for ways around the heat this summer..

I`ve checked out one of those MX-type armoured under-jackets and i reckon that`d be pefect with a summer jacket or sweatshirt.I`ve got other under-armour too (knees, back, shoulders, hips,,thighs, elbows) so in the event of an "off" i wont break any bones but would obviously get road rash in places.

Would you/do you ride like that in summer or do you always don the leathers/textiles no matter how hot it gets?

IXON Hacker Jacket

Got integral armour and a mixture of textile and mesh panels.

Very good but a little cold first thing in the morning or late at night and offers no waterproofing whatsoever.

Went for a nice ride the other day like this:

https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c390/chrisd87/DSC02601.jpg

Only gear was a Caberg Breeze half-face helmet.
One thing I noticed was how well I rode! Much more lesuirely and more aware of my surroundings.

I wear an old RST pro-series jacket. Vented in the tummy area, With the lining removed and wearing a t shirt underneath does the trick for me Thumbs Up

Interesting concept. Neutral

I've got a Knox jacket thats superb in the summer. Two long zips running up the back and one under each arm.

Its made out of keprotec which is supposed to be very resistent to wear and tear since it contains kevlar, obviously it also has full knox armour fitted.

The other materials in the lining are also supposed to cool you down.

Whatever else its made out of makes it very stretchy, a bit like spandex, so it also makes a good attempt at pulling my belly in.

Alpinestar and Joe Rocket have some good summer jackets.

Well I just one bought one of these:

https://www.biker247.com/news/10399.asp

Weiss Air Spin 2 in Black / Grey. £100

cos I am sick of sweating my cobs off riding through Bristol. So now I have 3 jackets, all Weiss; Full Textile waterproof/ Leather / and Air Spin.

That has to be enough, right?

At low speed, probably ok.

Personally, I'd much prefer to have broken bones than road rash. With my racing-crash last year I did break a bone (despite race boots, full one piece leathers etc) I was out of hospital in two days.

A colleague at worked crashed wearing trainers. His leg was broken, which it probably would have been anyway. What WAS bad was that the broken bone scraped along the road, taking a decent few centimetres of bone off.
It took him many months to get near to recovering in great pain as they let the bones heal, then slowly stretched them apart to try and regain the length.

Ok, my recovery wasn't perfect either - but I'd take it any day over the state I saw him in - I was back out on a bike and pretty much independent within two months or so.

So I'd go for something like Hood denims over motocross armour any day - not that you'd see me wearing a denim jacket on a bike, though.

Oh and don't expect MX armour to save /everything/; I broke my shoulder a year and a half ago and I'd say it was the armour that broke it - now it probably did it saving my shoulder getting completely mashed on a sharp rock off-road so it's not all bad.

It isn't designed to take abuse on the street though as off-road tends to have different characteristics to crashes. If you're talking any sort of rolling, I can see the armour getting ripped off and the next thing you impact breaking your bones anyway!

Note that you used to be able to get completely mesh armoured jackets made for street use.

Well, if we're posting pictures of riding in hot weather. Here's me off for a bimble to Key Largo:

Good shades and sunscreen are important. Don't bother with a bandanna if you're going to go over 80mph because they blow off round about then.

i hear what you`re saying but the couple i`ve been looking at seem well made.1 of them in particular looks like a really good deal and it`s got secure hoops coming off the armour with strap fasteners so they wont rip off.
https://www.getgeared.co.uk/acatalog/SUPER_SHIELD_Protector_Jacket.html

Or these:
https://www.bikersdirect.co.uk/Alpinestars-Bionic-Protection-Jacket_ACG4B.aspx

https://www.bikersdirect.co.uk/Alpinestars-SMX-Bionic-Protection-Jacket_ADYAO.aspx

or i could be a total basket case and get one of these....lol
https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/interceptor.htm

whatever i get i`m not gonna rush into this purchase coz there`s a few other options i could go with. Not gonna waste mega money on something i`ll only use for a few month out of every year.
I really need to get "something" though coz my textiles are a straight up nightmare in this weather. There`s no way i`m gonna be able to do a 2000 mile tour in them

The latter two are definitely enduro armour, which I reckon could easily be ripped off the moment you hit tarmac.
They are well made, but well made for their purpose. I've got one of these and it definitely wouldn't survive long rolling down the road.

The one that claims it can be used outside a a tshirt looks similarly made and I definitely wouldn't want to be trusting my skin with it.

Obvious answer is just to go faster Wink.

Here's how I kept cool last summer.

Must admit though , I haven't gone /that/ far with no safety gear at all on the roads... I have ridden locally in t-shirt but 99% of time I'd wear a jacket and gloves. I never really wear protective trousers, but when I get a dedicated road bike again I'll buy some textiles Cool

I own: https://www.mcaleicester.co.uk/uploads/2007210132842_resize.jpg

On hot days i wear boots, draggin jeans, the above mesh armor with a t-shirt/hoodie over the top and gloves.

Honestly though the last couple of days i have been riding around in t-shirt and shorts, I dont really know why but it has been quite amusing to see the dirty looks from other bikers sweating their balls off in full leathers. Mind you this is not for hooning, this is going to and from various places, so i adjust my riding accordingly, i agree with RXS Chris, when you dont have much gear on you ride accordingly...

Just as when im fully geared up with that armor under my leather jacket i tend to ride like a complete twat...

I remember reading something about the psychology of risk compensation or something like it... For instance when cars started getting ABS, instead of encouraging people to drive with further stopping distances they tailgated even harder, knowing they can stamp on the brakes later and get away with it. Im more likely to push the envelope when fully geared up, so in this baking weather im happy to ride nice and gently, remaining cool.

None of the things you've listed have strong enough mesh to have any serious abrhasion resistance - basically you're getting some armour held together with fish-net stockings.
If you're happy with that, fair enough. Especially if you're riding with your other half, you'd hope that you'd be being that bit more observant, etc anyway.

However, still, I'd be spending my money on something like these:
