Parkers price guide and scratch removal...

First off, could I have opinions on Parkers price guide? It's the only one I've ever used, as it's the only one I know about, but is it actually a good guide?

Secondly, I have looking at a bike that has obviously been down the road/dropped against a wall or something (see pics below). They aren't particually good pics, and I havn't seen the bike in the flesh so it's hard to judge how deep they are. Is there any way to remove the scratching? As in buffed/filled and patch painted, or would the only way to be get a whole new panel. If the repair idea would be possible, any ideas on the rough cost?

hi joe,

my experience is that most private buyers and sellers would go by the parkers price guide as a good guide,

however if you wanted to trade your bike in with a dealer they tend to use something called the "glass" guide or something like that....

when i was thinking about trading in my old bike parkers said its value was £895 (plus mine was very low mileage and mint condition so maybe more)....anyway when i asked about trade in at my local dealer he pulled out this whole other guide which I think was called a glass guide which valued it at £500!!!...

strangely tho when i asked him to show me what the "Glass" guide valued the bike I was buying from him at he hastily made his excuses and nipped out the back...I left the shop....

dont know if this helps but its my only experience!!

Yeah its called the Glass's guide. Gives you really low values, which is why dealers use it.

i judge a price on other similar vehicles that are for sale when buying/selling. i dont see how a book with fairly random prices in it can give an accurate valuation. Its all well and good it saying a bikes worth £2k but if yours is the only one available then its going to be worth more to the person that wants it as there is no other option.

Annoyingly dealers use the Glass pricing documents, which are always really low values.

I.e for my Fiesta, the part exchange value in Glass is £1500, but on Parkers is £1900.

Everytime I have been asking for 1,900 I get laughed away.

Dealers often won't show you the Glass's guide, because only dealers are supposed to look at it!

I personally think it is a bit of a method of price fixing between dealers, but seeing as nothing for sale has made 'book' price for a while, I can't see it being considered that accurate.

Often dealers will give a low trade in for bikes they won't sell themselves, because all that will happen is they will sell it at auction and lose loads of money anyway. The only time they give you anything relatively decent is when they can put the bike on their own forecourt and they think they can make some money. Still, they usually give 10-25% less than they can sell it for if they can help it, which is why a private sale is always preferable to a trade in.

I tend to find the glasses guide gives better dealer retail prices, and is the one to use when negotiating an insurance claim.

Other than that guides are just guides! Take a look around and get a feel for the prices people want for a particular bike. A bike might be listed as £1700 in Parkers, selling in Bike Trader for £2000 and only fetching £1200 on eBay.

Scratches,
Well the home kits/buffing out is used with compound to buff the top layer of laquer off which usually contains the small scratches.

Its often the drops and deliberate vandilism is the deeper gone through to paint/bare plastics.

1st picture looks possibly buffed out may be pushing it.
but the 2nd picture will need a repair, either being filled and resprayed or sanded abck all the paint and resprayed from scratch, Would have to be the whole panel perhaps more than 1 panel for a good colour match.

Dont know the rough pricing ill see if i can find out tommorow, i did mine today for free but thats because its what i do
I might possibly start repairing fairings on the side hm.

Just drop by the local Boots etc & get a pot of nail varnish, easiest way to bodge a repair on red paint

I even found one that matches Kawasaki Pearl Jade Green, had 2 tarts at some local beauty supply place faffing about for 10 minutes to match it
